KINGSFORD — As a hurricane pounds the Southwest of this country and wildfires inch their way toward the Northwest, the Golden K faithfully greets Monday with the Pledge to the Flag and song. They are grateful for where they live and send prayers of courage and strength for those enduring havoc as they reclaim their lives.
Chairperson Sharon Scholke signaled the opening of the meeting with just one strike of the bell. Alyce Derwinski dusted the ivories as Al Calcari lead the group in singing. The rendition of “Blue Skies” and “I’m Sending You A Big Bouquet of Roses” done by these seniors was one of a kind. Jeannine Polkinghorne resounding “Alleluia” for the song “Do Lord” climaxed the singing on a joyful note.
Guests for the day included Crystal Hogan, Dawn Kranz and Sandy Sullivan. Scholke humbly collected winnings in the 50-50 drawing.
Happy Dollars reflected elation from 91-year-old Bob Bowman, who radiantly recounted his recent adventure swimming at Spread Eagle lakes. These seniors just won’t be held down. Sharon Neubauer was happy for music in all its many forms.
Happy Birthday wishes went to Dan Pedo for Aug. 21 and Rose Pedo for Aug. 26. Happy Anniversary to Dr. Paul and Lorriane Jacobs on Aug. 24.
Today’s program was provided by the singing duo Crystal and Dawn. They needed no formal introduction to the Golden K, since these ladies have performed for the club many times.
Both have extensive backgrounds in music and spent many years directing chorals groups for local schools. Upon retiring, they combined their love of music and performing talent to become a duet and bring their music to others. The duo was born.
They coordinate two different types of guitars to blend perfectly with their voices. Their music has been enjoyed by many. Their repertoire pleases both young and old. Their intent is to preserve and share those songs that have inspired us through the generations. Songs by Tina Turner, John Denver, The Beatles and The Rascals had the group singing along and tapping feet. The short program left us all wanting to hear more. These two ladies are special people with exceptional talents. Thank goodness and the stars they are willing to share with all who ask.
Golden K will meet Monday with Diane Schabo from the Dickinson County Cancer Unit Loan Closet. All meetings start at 10 a.m. Don’t sleep in, join the fun, with doughnuts at the Presbyterian Church fellowship Hall.
