KINGSFORD — Sunshine is warm and inviting, but humidity is not so enjoyable. Nearby lakes and parks offer cool, relaxing places to spend the day. Picnics, outdoor concerts, farmers markets and campfires with roasting marshmallows create perfect summertime adventures.
The Golden K members met Monday morning bright, bubbly and ready for the day. Lois Outcelt wasted no time in getting the meeting started with opening ceremonies. With the Fourth of July waiting in the wings, Alyce Derwinski prepared several patriotic songs on the piano. Outcelt donned her singing leadership role and the group rocked the hall with “My Country Tis of Thee,” “America The Beautiful,” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” Welcomed guests included Teresa Cornelia, owner of Kenneth James Pediatric Salon, and her assistant, Elizabeth Hehn. Bill Roberts brought his grandson, Daniel.
Happy Birthday was sung for Pat Polzin, who also won the 50-50 drawing. Happy Dollars shared wonderful times spent with family in various summer events and wishes for a safe holiday for all.
Hehn handed out bags of surprises and printouts of foot health facts. Cornelia explained the information by going over the many things one should or should not do in caring for their feet.
Dr. Donald Heilala was a podiatrist in the local area and set the stage for people with foot ailments needing professional care for their feet. He went door to door, visited nursing homes and made office calls.
Cornelia accepts her responsibility to the community just as seriously. Working in conjunction with Dr. Adina Anderson and upgrading her education are two ways she assures patients get the treatment they require. If she cannot help them directly, she will find someone who can.
Foot problems can be complex and varied.
Cornelia explained nail fungus, thick toenails, ingrown nails and diabetes foot care. She explained some of the causes and treatments, including the proper cutting of the nails.
Foot problems can affect your general health, walking, standing, and mobility. Getting proper care is essential to discovering what your problem is and how to correct it before it becomes a critical issue. She suggested putting a mirror on the floor and holding your foot over it to see what’s on the bottom.
It is important to have proper fitting shoes. Pick a store that has a salesman who will sit with you and fit your foot as it should be. There is one in town. Having proper shoes for all occasions can prevent problems from occurring.
Cornelia counsels that regular foot care is vital to your good health. She shares innovative suggestions for daily foot care. She clearly explains causes and remedies, giving her patients confidence in their care.
Her favorite saying is, “Take care of your feet because they carry you all of your life.”
Golden K will not meet Monday. Members will have the opportunity to attend funeral services for Maxine Vaccrello, a valued member of the Golden K. Services will be Monday at the First Covenant Church Iron Mountain. The club extends its sympathy to the family.
They will meet again at 10 a.m. Monday, July 14, at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford, with guests speakers from the Iron Mountain Downtown Development Authority.
