KINGSFORD — Looking out the window facing north, the bird bath is still buried in snow. Move to the south side of the house and the grass is showing promise of green grass.

The birds are busy checking the ground for possible food supply and building nests. One could put on snowshoes and take a walk around the north fields or head to the south side and begin raking up the yard, bringing life back to the grass and flower beds. Nice to have a choice of venue.

Eager to share their weekend activities, Golden K members fill the First Presbyterian Church fellowship with chatter.

Fresh donuts and the smell of coffee fill the room as the Golden K members gather. Kathy Jo Anderson with gavel in hand brings the club to order, Judy Sielaff with the list of songs prepares to lead the singers with Alyce Derwinski on piano keeping the music flowing and the oldies ring out loud and clear.

In keeping that momentum going, the “Welcome Song” was sung for visitor Sue Sjoquist and guest speaker Sonia Donnelly and Liz Sielaff.

Gary Proudfit presented the Happy Dollars, which included Candy Bruchcuski’s son, Scott Beaulier, who will be running in the Boston Marathon on Monday; and Ron Jouppi, who spent his weekend with children, grandchildren and great-grandchild at Mall of America celebrating Leo’s 5th birthday.

Anderson’s Thought for the Day was, “With money one can buy a clock, but not time.” Time is a precious commodity for all of us.

Guest speaker Donnelly is a lady who uses her time to the fullest extent. She heads up many programs and events at the the First Presbyterian Church, as well as being involved with the Girl Scouts.

Having made several moves before settling on Hamilton Avenue, this church established itself as link between people, activities and community services from its inception to the present time.

Donnelly oversees a multitude of activity inside and outside of the building. From a soup kitchen to today’s drive-through meals, providing Christmas dinner for about 60 people for pick-up or delivery, programs for 3-year-olds to high school, playground area and pavilion for outdoor events, Red Cross blood drives, Habitat for Humanity meetings as well as the Golden K.

Vacation Bible School, which takes place in June, is a weeklong event for all ages and open to the community. There is so much more Sonia does and she is thankful for the many volunteers of all ages who help make all these projects successful.

Donnelly also oversees the Girl Scout program for the Upper Peninsula. Locally, there are 120 girls and 30 volunteer leaders who were busy with their cookie drive recently. Community service projects within their neighborhoods, nursing homes and learning about the world around them are goals they hope to achieve. There is a camp for summer activities also

Donnelly meets every challenge with the hope of improvement for the people involved and the community in which they live.

Golden K will meet at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford. Paul Larson will present his program on the IXL Historical Museum in Hermansville. All are welcome.

Starting at $3.50/week.
