Library program coordinator presents program to Golden K

KINGSFORD — The calendar indicates spring is here. Overlooking the garden where daffodils and crocus should be popping out, there is only snow. The root beer stand has opened, and all things seem to be ready. What’s missing? The green grass. One can only hope for warmer days and nights.

After a busy week of Easter services, family visits and long-awaited egg hunts, Monday morning brought the seniors to the Golden K meeting ready to share their adventures.

Candy Buchcuski took over the chair duties, bringing the group together for the opening ceremonies. Taking up the leadership role of the music was Alyce Derwinski on piano and her volunteer song leader, Judy Sielaff.

After a rendition of a few oldies, the “Welcome Song” was sung for guests Emily Cummings from the Dickinson County Library and Shirley Winters. The 50-50 drawing was won by Judy Sielaff, as she came back from vacation and kept her table in the number one position of winners for the drawing. Happy Dollars were full of happiness for family, sunshine, Gospodarek’s daughter being able to play golf — somewhere — and a proud mother, Candy, for her son Dustin Beaulier receiving his master of business administration degree. Ron Jouppi was happy to be spending some quality time with his daughters. He was also glad to hear the downed serviceman had been found.

Guest speaker Emily Cummings, Dickinson County Library local history, adult programming and programming coordinator, brought the club up to date on the library.

The definition of a library is “a collection of books, pamphlets, magazines and reference materials.” But not today. The local library has expanded to include unending ideas for learning and hands-on projects. The library is a place where visitors share their hobbies, stories and learning materials for others to see.

Programs at the library include infant/toddler Little Senses Playgroup, Lego Club, Gamers Club, and Bow Wows and Books reading to therapy dogs, teen-adult crafting workshops, and book clubs for all ages. There may even be a reward for completing reading goals.

They bring books, audio books, movies and magazines to your home, while also offer hot spots. Books are even available by mail.

Several kits, such as the bird watching backpack, are available to check out for bird watching people of all ages. You can take them to watch birds anywhere from your backyard to the Keweenaw.

There is a game table to explore with interactive games for individuals and multi-players.

Programs are currently being scheduled for the summer. Guest speakers for a variety of subjects are planned, including local history and a visit from an antique appraiser, a representative from PBS’s “Antiques Road Show.”

Contact the library for more information. They are open to suggestions and ideas as they meet the needs of the community. The library can be reached at 906-774-1218 or online at www.dcl-liborg or their Faceboook page.

Golden K meets at 10 a.m. Mondays at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford. All are welcome.

Starting at $3.50/week.
