Golden K invites community members to become part of the service organization

KINGSFORD -- The Golden K meeting Monday began with traditional opening ceremonies. Alyce Derwinski on piano joined Lois Outcelt to lead the singing of some old tunes. "That Old Gang of Mine" brought back fond memories.

Judy Sielaff picked up winnings from the 50-50 drawing, and Steve Mulka was wished a "happy birthday."

The Golden K has always been a service organization, with a mission to support children with special needs in the community. With the support of the First Presbyterian Church and a host of volunteers, they organize and facilitate three events for these kids throughout the year.

In addition, members strive to support the aging community by providing bingo games at local nursing homes. Rounding out the vision, the club donates to seven charities and helps provide scholarships to local students.

In support of the club's endeavors, they conduct a peanut fundraiser near the Labor Day weekend. Local stores have generously offered space for the group to ask for donations that enable the club to continue giving back throughout the year. This year's event will take place on Sept. 4 with a rain date of Sept. 5. Look for the yellow shirts and smiling seniors.

They welcome your help in the form of contributions and time. Contact the club through the Dickinson County Golden K Facebook page if you're interested to be involved. You also are welcome to any of the Monday morning meetings.

Golden K is actively searching for a new treasurer, as the previous member recently relocated to Florida. In addition, they would appreciate help setting up and manning the donation tables on Sept. 4. It's a fun way to interact with the community face to face.

Volunteers run bingo on the second Thursday of the month at Optalis Healthcare and the second Friday of the month at Freeman Nursing and Rehabilitation Community. Contact Bill Roberts at 906-282-9233 if you'd like to be part of any of the club's endeavors.

General meetings include various speakers, PowerPoint presentations and entertainment, making for a pleasant time for all. Meetings are open to everyone. Come any Monday at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford and join in the coffee, doughnuts, and shared stories of family events.
