Food pantry coordinators present program to Golden K

KINGSFORD -- As summer winds down, it's like being on vacation. Labor Day, the county fair, and A&W closing signaled the transition.
Monday brought members together sharing Labor Day holiday experiences. Chairperson Sue Proudfit rang the bell and lead the group through opening ceremonies. Alyce Derwinski on piano along with her able assistant, Lois Outcelt, lead the singing. The room quickly filled with music.
Guests included Mary Gagala and Fran Gundlach from St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, as well as Susan Lucas and Kendra Trulock from Dickinson-Iron Community Services Agency's Retired Senior Volunteer Program, or RSVP. All were welcomed with song.
Gary Proudfit shared Happy Dollar thoughts reflecting time enjoyed with family and friends and special events. Candy Buchcuski shared her 70th birthday with multiple generations of family. Lois Outcelt happily took home winnings from the 50-50 drawing.
Mary Gagala and Fran Gundlach coordinate the operations of the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, along with the help of 20 other volunteers.
Volunteers are essential to St. Vincent's community success. Currently there is a need for a volunteer to answer the phone on Tuesday mornings and every other Thursday.
Food is distributed after clients have registered by phone. Current business days are from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday. There are varied assistance opportunities in sorting, packing, loading supplies and distribution.
In June, July and August, a total of 221 households were served. That translates to 592 individuals, 189 children, 92 seniors and 44 veterans. Approximately $51,000 went back into the community to provide food.
There is also limited assistance available to help with utilities, gas, laundry and hotel stays. They noted there are restrictions for the program.
This past year has seen an increase in utility and food requests. Meals are assembled and provided for three holidays each year.
The food pantry is supported by grants and donations from community. They noted the support has been outstanding.
Last fall, a landslide amount of food items were collected and donated by Kingsford High School students.
People can stop by during business hours to donate food, supplies, paper bags or household goods.
This fall, Gagala will have reached her six-year limit as president of the food pantry. Someone will be needed to step into to her shoes. Golden K thanks Mary for her years of devoted service.
Golden K will meet at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford. Guest speaker will be Jack Vander Lugt, executive director of Bay Cliff Health Camp. All are welcome.
