Golden K chairperson Judy Sielaff introduces guest speaker Abby Baumgartner, a pharmacist at The Drug Store in Iron Mountain.

KINGSFORD -- With Michigan's unpredictable fall weather, it pays to be prepared. Whether clearing leaves by machine or hand-raking, appropriate clothing is a must. A T-shirt and shorts may seem comfortable at first, but keeping a jacket and umbrella nearby is wise. When wind and rain arrive together, it may be time to put away the equipment, head indoors and settle into a comfortable recliner.

Rain or shine, Monday mornings are reserved for the Golden K. Chairperson Judy Sielaff welcomed members and guest speaker Abby Baumgartner, a pharmacist at The Drug Store in Iron Mountain.

These seniors are prepared for anything. Singing "God Bless America" a cappella and reciting the "Pledge of Allegiance" comes naturally. The group also sang "Happy Birthday" to Mary Jane Nelson and gave Baumgartner its traditional welcome song.

Dorleen Uhazie happily accepted her winnings from the 50-50 drawing, while Bill Roberts shared a happy dollar in celebration of Michigan Technological University winning the Miners Cup for the 16th consecutive year.

Sielaff's "Thought for the Day" focused on health and well-being, leading into Baumgartner's presentation on 10 ways a pharmacist can help simplify healthcare.

Baumgartner explained that a local pharmacy, such as TDS, offers much more than prescription services. Pharmacists can answer medication questions, provide guidance on over-the-counter products and help patients better understand their healthcare options.

Using a handout, she outlined services that pharmacies may provide, including medication synchronization to coordinate monthly refills, prescription delivery, vaccinations and assistance with Medicare prescription coverage. Other services may include durable medical equipment, safety equipment and supplies, nutrition and wellness guidance, and access to additional health care resources.

Baumgartner encouraged members to ask their pharmacist questions when they are unsure about medications or the next steps in their care. While a primary care physician remains an important first point of contact for medical concerns, pharmacists can serve as valuable partners in helping patients manage their health.

Working together, patients, pharmacists and primary care providers can help make healthcare easier to understand and support healthier lives.

The Golden K will meet at 10 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford, with a representative of the Iron Mountain Fire Department scheduled to speak. All are welcome to attend.
