KINGSFORD — “Music makes the world go ’round” and so it was on a gloomy and foggy looking Monday morning. The music of the Kingsford High School Jazz band lifted the spirits from the first song to the last as they jazzed up the Golden K March 6.

It’s wonderful to see these young musicians perform at top level under the enthusiastic direction of their band director, Ben Sherk.

The Golden K program chairman Walter “Whitey” Jensen was just as enthusiastic to introduce the KHS Jazz band and Sherk. Whitey even wore his Kingsford High Flivver hat and shirt for the occasion.

Members of the Kingsford High School Jazz band are, on vibes: Kira Peters; piano: Mitch Wiltzius; front row from left are guitars: Ethan Wilcox, Katarina Hanson; sax: Lena Stenvig, Alli Sparpana, Meryl Louma-Mannisto, Sarah Sherk, Caroline To, Logan Smith, Cameron Mulka; second row, string bass: Daniel Peterson; trombone: Jaron Hudson, Austin Sirovy, Ben Stanish, Bryce Horwitz; third row, percussion: Marcus Kazianka, Mario Ochietti; trumpets: Casey Hansley, Kyle Kruppstadt, Ben Vercoe, Luke Sturm, and Dominic Occhietti.

The first song had us tapping our fingers and toes to the tune of “I Wan’na Be Like You” by John Wasson and then “Mood Indigo” by Duke Ellington.

“Children of Sanchez” by Victor Lopez was the next song followed by “You Made Me Love You” with arrangement by Eric Richards.

An arrangement by Frank Comstock of “Sing Sing Sing” was the closing song followed by a standing ovation from the Golden Krs. There were several solo and small group instrumentalists during the presentation with each done extremely well.

Many thanks to the KHS Jazz band for so joyfully treating Golden K with your gift of music.

While the students enjoyed some sweet rolls, milk and juice afterwards, the Golden K held their brief business meeting.

The March chairman Gilbert Engel earlier called for the pledge to the flag and singing of “God Bless America.” It was nice to have the students join with the group.

Happy Birthday was sung for GKer Bonnie Antonetti. The big “Pot of Gold” winner was Lorraine Luba.

The chairman announced that the Golden Throats would not be singing at any of the nursing homes during March as we do not have a piano player for the month of March.

Bingo was happening though this week at two of the nursing homes.

Several Happy Dollars read by Don Pedo expressed being happy to have the fantastic KHS Jazz band for the program. Wendy Mulka was happy to have her son, Cameron playing with the band today and tells us Cameron is off to Tech next year. Cameron’s grandparents, Hank and Joyce London were also happy to hear their grandson as part of the band. Aggie Cavaiani.was happy her daughter, Paula Chapman was one of four finalists for the Bellin tailgate cook off at the Continental Cup Ski Tournament at Pine Mountain with her Bluesy Greek deviled eggs recipe using blue cheese.

The Golden K looks forward to having the new Dickinson County Sheriff Scott Rutter on the program for Monday. New members and visitors are welcome to Golden K each Monday morning from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church on Hamilton Avenue in Kingsford. Coffee and sweet rolls is always a treat at GK on Monday morning.
