IRON MOUNTAIN — Don Khoury will be among the featured artists at the Art For All event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 23, rain or shine at Iron Mountain’s City Park.
Khoury’s grandfather, John Khoury, had a store in 1900 — candy and men’s clothing — in an old wooden building at the same downtown Iron Mountain site where Don Khoury now has The Wishing Well Gifts, his business since 1947.
Khoury has always enjoyed making something out of a piece of discarded wood or metal. His store has hundreds of things he has made, such as a coat rack made of old hammer heads or saw handles, old antique hooks and even square nails. Tables made from white birch limbs or grayed tree branches. He’s made old doors out of weathered wood fencing and wooden trays with ceramic tile inserts.
Khoury began making items when he was 10 years old and says he can’t stop. His talent “comes from God,” he said, and he is grateful for it.
The event will offer a vast array of artworks, as well as musical entertainment and interesting demonstrations. A hands-on craft area will be available for children.
EconoFoods will provide a “better than ever picnic,” with Fred Jump doing a pig roast. A silent auction provides funds for an area senior art student.
Those attending will have the chance to win $50, to be spent at the art show, with drawings at 11 a.m. and 1 and 2 p.m. June 23.
