Pair enjoy cribbage on unique, homemade board

George Peterson enjoys a game of cribbage with 12-year-old Logan McCord.

CRYSTAL FALLS — A heartwarming smile spread across George Peterson’s face as he recalled a recent special day with a very special young man.

Peterson is an 89-year-old, recently-widowed man who lives at Victorian Heights Assisted Living in Crystal Falls. He is known for his love of cards, any game, and any time.

Logan McCord, a 13-year-old young man, whose grandmother also lives at Victorian Heights, made his day when he came to play cribbage.

Seventy-six years may separate the two, but their friendship came easy.

Peterson was delighted to tell McCord about the unique cribbage board the two were using for their game.He had made the board in 1960 out of oak inlayed with black walnut. He recalled with pride how he made the pegs the two of them were using with valve stems from a German diesel engine.

The peg holes were fashioned with boot eyelets he assembled almost 50 years ago.

As for the winner of the game, George says with a sweet smile, “He’s a real good player, but I got past him this time.”
