NORWAY — Jenna Alsbury of Vulcan Middle School in Norway recently won first place in the state essay contest for seventh-grade students, sponsored by the Purple Heart Society of Michigan.

Alsbury received $500 for the state contest and also took first place in the local contest, where she received $100. Noah Morgan was awarded second place in the local contest and he received $75. They are students in Gail Robert’s social studies class at VMS.

Both essays were sent on to the state competition. Alsbury’s essay has been forwarded on to the National Competition in Washington D.C., where she has the potential to win an even greater cash award.

There is a new theme for the essay each year, which include guidelines for questions to be answered, how it is to be written and how to submit the essay.

This year, essays were to answer questions about Armistice Day: What is it, when it was signed and where it happened. Students also had to include in the essay why it is important to honor veterans today and how they personally do that.

The essays are to be written in cursive and in ink.
