NORWAY — The Norway Area Preservation Society is sponsoring its second annual Curb Appeal Contest for Norway, Vulcan, Loretto and Waucedah residents.

The contest is to recognize and encourage homeowners to show pride in their homes and communities.

By definition, curb appeal is based on a home’s features that may be observed from the street. An attractive entrance, porch and front yard are examples of what give a home its curb appeal. But other elements — such as landscaping that utilizes trees, bushes, plants and flowers — also can enhance a residence.

“There are so many ways to create curb appeal,” said Carol Sundstrom, a NAPS spokeswoman. “Something as simple as paint colors can really add to a home’s appeal.”

Details such as shutters, flower boxes, even touches of whimsical yard art, can give a home character and charm, she said. There is no single formula for what makes a house have curb appeal, according to NAPS.

“From porch swings to flower pots, each house has its own identity, and that contributes to the attractiveness of an entire neighborhood,” Sundstrom said.

There are a variety of styles of residences within the communities — from historic homes to new construction. The contest is a way to recognize the pride that is expressed by local residents.

“A little bit of care and effort can make a big difference, and this contest is one way to express appreciation

for that,” Sundstrom said. The Norway Area Preservation Society is a non-profit group dedicated to the preservation and beautification of the communities of Norway, Vulcan, Loretto, and Waucedah.

The Curb Appeal Contest deadline is July 31. Those wishing to enter should send their name, address, and phone number to norwaypreservation@gmail.com or mail to NAPS, W3241 Lake Louise Drive, Vulcan, MI 49892.

Judging will be completed in August.

Contest winners will receive prizes from NAPS and local businesses. In addition to prizes, winning homes may be published in area newspapers and on the NAPS website at norwayareapreservation.org.
