Queen Marinette Award nominations being taken

MARINETTE, Wis. — The Women’s Giving Circle of Marinette and Menominee Counties, a committee of the foundation, is seeking nominations for its sixth annual Queen Marinette Award.

The award was created to recognize women who work towards creating a positive impact on the lives of women and girls and actively help them achieve their personal and professional goals. Nominees must live, work, or volunteer in Marinette or Menominee counties. Members of the Women’s Giving Circle Steering Committee and/or the Grant Committee are not eligible for this award.

Past award winners include the late Susan Bunting, First Street Academy of Dance; Hannah Bell, founder and coach of the Menominee Girls Softball team and employee of Aurora Health Care; Ruth Hryshkanych, recently retired from Lake Lundgren Bible Camp; Sara Hansen of Communities that Care; and Michele Hampton with the Greater Marinette-Menominee YMCA.

To nominate, go to www.surveymonkey.com/r/GLVWLNV. A link to the nomination form can also be found on the Giving Circle’s Facebook page or printed and mailed to the Community Foundation at 1110 10th Ave., Suite L-1, Menominee, MI 49858. Deadline for submission is Sunday, Sept. 1.

The honor is named for Marie Antoinette Chevalier, who became known as Queen Marinette. Queen Marinette started a trading post near the mouth of the Menominee River. It flourished and grew into the area now occupied by the cities of Menominee and Marinette.

“The award will be given to a woman we feel reflects the spirit of Queen Marinette: generous with her time, community-minded and respected by peers.” said Kalyani Grasso, MMACF Woman’s Giving Circle Committee chairwoman.

The Queen Marinette Award, always a surprise, will be presented at the Women’s Giving Circle annual meeting and grant ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 19, at University of Wisconsin Green Bay-Marinette Campus. The event will be 5 to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. Admission is $5 and includes hors d’oeuvres, dessert and networking. The event is also the Women’s Giving Circle’s annual fundraiser.
