Daily Meditations: Avoid worshipping false gods

One of the classic movies of all time was the film “The Ten Commandments,” which was directed by the famous Cecil B. DeMille. He was asked by a Hollywood columnist what commandment he thought people broke the most. DeMille responded that, “It was the first Commandment telling us not to worship false gods.”

DeMille added, “Oh, we don’t bow down before graven images, but we do worship the gods of comfort, gods of money, and gods of power.”

This was said by DeMille in 1956. We not only worship the above gods that he mentioned, and it is easy to add to the list. We have the god of drugs and alcohol, the god of porn. Also, our work can become a god.

Sports can become a god. It can take over family life in such a way that is destructive instead of life giving. Too much sports activity can lead to no real quality time with one another.

Sports can also interfere in our relationship with God. We can be so busy with sport tournaments on weekends, that we have no time for prayer or worship.

I remind our students the ability to play football or basketball, or any sport, is a gift from God. That is why we should find time for church.

There are some people who seem to have the Green Bay Packers as their god, but I would rather not go there!

I think Cecil B. DeMille had it right — the Commandment we break the most is the First: “You shall not worship false gods.” I might change that a bit and say, it is the Commandment that we “break ourselves” on the most!

God bless.
