Golden K members to be honored at next meeting

Dr. Paul Jacobs photo | From left are the current board members of Dickinson County Golden K: Joan Jouppi, Sue Proudfit, John Aune, Ben Determan, Bill Roberts, Mary Jane Nelson, Vance Uhazie and Orice Walters. Not shown are Sharon Scholke, Gilbert Engel, Kirk Olson and Bob Tahick.

The Golden K “chorus of seniors” filled the fellowship hall at First Presbyterian Church with music Monday.

Getting the piano warmed up was Sue LeDuc, along with the able director, Al Calcari.

Happy birthday was sung for Marty Waananen, Sept. 2; Dennis Chartier, Sept 3; Dorleen Uhazie, Sept 12; and Don Sorenson, Sept. 15. Happy anniversary wishes went out to John and Fran Jamar, Sept. 7.

“Happy dollars” included Vivian Johnson, happy to be spending some time with brother, Ron; John Corson, happy for Packers defense, not so much for the offense. Paul and Myna Ward had a great trip doing the circle route around Lake Superior with their son.

Aggie Cavaiani’s great-grandson, Riley, took advantage of the new program at the library, Bow Wow and Books, learning to read with a furry friend at your side. Kids of all ages are welcome to read out loud to a therapy dog.

Golden Kers are collecting old fishing poles. Their project will be to refurbish these poles and offer them free to any child between ages 8 to 12. The fishing pole project has just begun and when poles have been restored they will be given out to the children at a later date. Any Golden K member can gather used poles anytime from anyone wishing to donate and there will be more information as this project unfolds.

Thank you to all Golden K members for their efforts on the recent Peanut Fundraiser. The success of a fundraiser depends on the communities involved. This area is blessed with people who generously give of their time and money to help those local charities who in turn help others. At this time, businesses that donated include: Jacobs Funeral Home; ERA Chevrolet; M Bank of Niagara, Wis.; Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Federal Credit Union; First National Bank & Trust; Erickson, Rochon and Nash Funeral Home; Bloom Wholesale; Blagec Bros.; Edwards Automotive; La Faive Oil; MJ Electric; Northern State Bank of Norway; Fleury, Singler & Co.; First Bank; Riverside Auto; and Simone Insurance; as well as the many individual donation gathered from local stores.

Walmart, Super One, Tadych’s Family Market, Pat’s Foods in Norway and Great Lakes Fresh Foods in Niagara, Wis., graciously allow Golden K to set up near their doors to meet and greet people and provide information about the club. Thanks to these stores for helping make this fundraiser a success. These monies help the Golden K with its parties for special needs children, donate back to seven local charities and offer a scholarship to a local graduate.

Golden K meets every Monday except on holidays at the First Presbyterian Church.

This Monday, they will have a special program recognizing the “original” members, both in attendance and those unable to meet on that date.

There will be a time for reflections from anyone who wishes to share thoughts and experiences from “older” times with the Golden K. Meetings begin at 9:30 a.m. to allow time for singing, with the business meeting at 10 a.m. and program at 10:30.

The Golden Throats will sing Wednesday at Freeman Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in Kingsford.
