IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain-Kingsford Branch of the American Association of University Women sponsored the M. Jean Jokipii Memorial Speech Contest on Nov. 20 at Bay College West in Iron Mountain.

The contest was open to all area high school students. It required presenting an original five- to six-minute persuasive speech on the topic “In your opinion, what is the most pressing issue (social/political/economic) facing your generation?” Using the extemporaneous mode of delivery, students were to answer the question, thoroughly research the topic and support the answer with evidence.

The three prize winners were: Brady Steinbrecher, Niagara High School, first place; Abigail Bousley, Niagara High School, second place; and Ian Anderson, Iron Mountain High School, third place.

Students were only allowed to use one 4-by-6-inch index card when presenting their speech.

Judges were AAUW members Joyel Brule, Lynne Crockford, Kathryn Girard, Barb Rice and Lynne Wilson. Kristine Schroeder was the timekeeper, Catherine Pirkola the tabulator, Kathryn Girard the photographer, and Jan Van Gasse the Speech Trek chairwoman.
