DACF brings back ‘Christmas in the Wizarding World’ fundraiser

Annika Hill and Sofia Wentarmini enjoy a ride in the Weasley’s Flying Ford Anglia at the 2019 “Christmas in the Wizarding World” fundraiser.

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Dickinson Area Community Foundation’s popular “Christmas in the Wizarding World” fundraiser is back for the third year.

The last two events both sold out and organizers are hoping 2020 does the same, with tickets now remaining only for the Friday event.

The one-of-a-kind, “Harry Potter”-themed festivities will take place Friday and Saturday at Hogwarts School — aka Pine Grove Country Club — in Iron Mountain. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner served at 7:15 p.m.

Attendees are greeted with floating candles, famous Hogsmeade locations and more than 30 different characters from the Harry Potter series of films, including Ollivander, Professor Snape, Voldemort, Madame Pomfrey and members of the Weasly and Dursley families.

Gilderoy Lockhart also will be in attendance, likely hawking his autobiography, “Magical Me,” and signing autographs for his admiring fans.

A Marauder’s Map is provided to allow for easy access to all areas of Hogwarts.

This family-friendly event provides opportunities to visit famous places such as Ollivander’s Wand Shoppe, Honeydukes Candy Store and The Leaky Cauldron.

Melissa Wentarmini, director of finance and marketing, notes that tickets have been sold to attendees as far away as the lower Peninsula and southern Wisconsin areas.

“We are thrilled to introduce our fabulous event to new guests and feel that the willingness of people to drive so far is a testament to the immersive experience our guests receive at the event,” she said.

The event, a major fundraiser for the Foundation’s mini-grant program, allowed for the disbursement of more than $22,000 in mini-grants to the community in 2019.

Foundation staff works hard to introduce new elements to the event each year so those who return as well as first-timers continue to be enthralled and engaged.

In addition to the evening’s various activities and locations, guests are treated to a delicious, wizard-inspired seated meal, performances by the actors and the chance to win many drawing prizes, including tickets to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

Tickets are $60, with a portion of that being tax-deductible. They can be purchased at www.dickinsonareacf.org/events.

“We couldn’t do what we do without the support of our community, our board and our fabulous event sponsors,” said Tamara Juul, DACF executive director. “We are fortunate this year to have Rudy’s Body Shop; First National Bank of Iron Mountain; M.J. Electric; Eden Property Collection; Hall Orthodontics; Bacco Construction; Fleury, Singler & Co.; Paul and Julie Cowling; Town & Country Ford; The Drug Store; CCI Systems; and Ameriprise Financial sponsor various locations within Hogwarts and Hogsmeade, allowing us to blend local businesses with our magical event.”
