MSU Extension offering National Prevention Diabetes Program online

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Gained weight during the stay-at-home order? Ever been diagnosed with prediabetes or encouraged to lose weight due to diabetes in the family background?

Michigan State University Extension has received full program recognition from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to offer the National Diabetes Prevention Program online via Zoom

This course is designed for people who are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The focus is on establishing lifestyle changes that promote healthy eating, physical activity and setting goals that lead to a 5% to 7% weight loss and decreased risk for type 2 diabetes.

Those eligible should be:

— Be at least 18 years old;

— Be overweight (a Body Mass Index, or BMI, of ≥25; ≥23 if Asian);

— Not be pregnant;

— Have no previous diagnosis of type 1 or type 2 diabetes;

— Have a blood test result in the prediabetes range within the past year or have a previous clinical diagnosis of gestational diabetes.

A mandatory program orientation meeting will be noon to 1 p.m. July 6 that will provide detailed information about the program. The series will start the next Monday, July 13, from noon to 1 p.m. Attendance is more manageable since it can be done from home and at no cost.

To register, contact Extension Health Educator Tracie Abram at 906-235-2985, abram@msu.edu or at https://events.anr.msu.edu/UPNDPP7620/.
