Smith awarded veteran alliance scholarship

PAIGE SMITHv

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Dickinson County Veteran Alliance has announced Paige Smith, a nursing student from Iron Mountain, received a 2020 scholarship of $500 for her essay on “The Sacrifices of Gold Star Families.”

This scholarship has been awarded annually for the past five years. It is open to all students who will be or are attending Bay College West in Iron Mountain.

To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must write an essay on the assigned topic and read the essay as part of the Memorial Day program.

This year, the Memorial Day program at the Dickinson County Courthouse was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Smith recorded her essay and it was broadcast on WHTO-FM 106.7 during the recorded Memorial Day program organized by the Dickinson County Office of Veteran Affairs.

The Dickinson County Veterans Alliance, along with the Dickinson County Office of Veteran Affairs, acknowledges Smith for her entry and wishes her great success in her future endeavors.

Current or potential Bay West students should watch for scholarship applications in December for the 2021 school year. The information will be at all local high school counselor offices and at the Bay West campus counselor’s office.

For more information on this scholarship, contact the Dickinson County Office of Veteran Affairs at 906-774-2820. Or “like” the office page on Facebook, where they keep the public informed of all things veteran-related and have the scholarship information and application posted in December.
