AAUW looks to the future

The Iron Mountain-Kingsford Branch of the American Association of University Woman is celebrating its 100-year anniversary in 2021. The local branch is the oldest branch in the Upper Peninsula and the sixth-oldest branch in the state. This is part of a series of articles highlighting AAUW’s local projects that support the community and where they plan to go in 2021 and beyond.

By LISA PANGRAZZI

Iron Mountain/Kingsford Branch President

AAUW is a nationally recognized nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that strives to promote equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy. For the past century, the Iron Mountain/Kingsford Branch of AAUW has supported this mission by providing college scholarships and promoting equity for women and girls through mission-based programs, Speech Trek competition, annual book sale and Candidates’ Forum. We are appealing to young women to help carry us into the next century. Many organizations are struggling to attract women of this age group as they are possibly overwhelmed with everyday responsibilities such as juggling children and family life, work life and caring for aging parents.

In moving our branch forward, my hope is to make it easier and more convenient for women to become interested in our local branch and support of our mission by using our website and utilizing social media platforms. AAUW of Michigan president

AAUW of Michigan is a leader in Michigan’s efforts to advance equity with 32 branches and 1,900 members. Our strategic plan focuses on economic security, education and leadership through programming, advancement, communications and external relations, public policy and research, and governance and sustainability.

AAUWMI offers programming to branches throughout the state, encouraging branches to collaborate regionally and focus on mission-based and strategic plan-related programs that are open to the public. We have developed a new transparent website regarding events and mission-driven information and activities.

Work Smart Online, free salary negotiation training, is linked on our website home page at www.aauwmi.org, as is a link to our Facebook page. AAUW of Michigan serves as a liaison between the national organization and the branches. Moving forward, we will focus on new ways to do business to sustain and continue to serve our branches.
