Antique appraisals, car show and music event on Sept. 11 at the IC Museum

CASPIAN — The Iron County Historical Museum will host Classics & Curios from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 11.

The event will offer antique appraisals, classic car and farm machinery show, and a music program. Admission is free, with food and drinks available for purchase.

Professional appraiser Mark Moran will make the trip from his hometown in Iowa to offer value estimations on a wide variety of items throughout three one-hour sessions. Spectators are welcome to this “Antique Roadshow,” to enjoy fascinating history as Moran explains the context of various objects. Pre-event registration is required to have an item appraised, and the cost is $15 per item. Moran also will offer home visits throughout the weekend for large, fragile or multiple items.

Categories of objects eligible for appraisal include: Americana (autographs and historical documents); fine art; furniture; ceramics (ancient artifacts, figural pottery, vases, stoneware); glassware; vintage photographs; posters; folk art; quilts; toys; metalware; clocks; costume jewelry; musical instruments; antique and vintage lighting; books; and sporting memorabilia.

Excluded items include: all weapons (swords, guns, knives), though folding knives with advertising are accepted; traps (e.g. leg-hold); Nazi memorabilia; coins and paper money; fine jewelry (precious gems); Beanie Babies.

“We’re so excited to be able to offer this appraisal service,” said Erika Sauter, museum director. “We hope folks will take advantage of this opportunity to find out what that family heirloom is worth.”

Classics & Curios will also feature a display of vintage cars and farm machinery. All makes and models are welcome and there is no entry fee, though pre-registration is appreciated.

At 2 p.m., entertainer Bill Jamerson will perform “Up in the U.P.” Dressed as an iron miner with guitar in hand, Jamerson performs original songs and tells stories about the early immigrants, their work in the mines, growing up during The Great Depression, ski jumping competitions, the use of saunas, pasties as the food of choice for the miners and stories about ethnic traditions.

“There will be historical fun for everyone and all ages at this one-of-a-kind event,” Sauter said.
