FLORENCE, Wis. -- Florence County Historical Society has installed new informational signs in the former jail.
The jail, located on the county's courthouse square, was constructed in 1889, at the same time as the governmental building. Both of these buildings are on the Wisconsin Historical listing and the National Register of Historic Places.
The two signs, one detailing the history of the courthouse and the other the jail, give those viewing the historic jail an understanding of the buildings. The society spent the winter sorting through information and pictures for the signs.
Xcell Graphics of Spread Eagle, Wis., designed and created the finished signs. The former jail is open to the public and provides an idea of the primitive interior from more than 100 years ago. The jail is among only two in Wisconsin that remain with very few changes.
