IC Genealogical Society to tour Harbour House Museum

CRYSTAL FALLS — The Iron County Genealogical Society will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday, at the Harbour House Museum, 17 N. Fourth St., Crystal Falls. Please note the change of venue.

The group will tour the former Harbour family home, which was built at the turn of the 20th century and features a unique architectural steamboat-style construction.

The two-story building accommodates wrap-around porches on both levels, with a marvelous view of the city.  The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites as “The Murphy Home.”

The first floor replicates a way of life during the early 1900s — a music parlor, library, and dining room and a grand foyer at the entrance. A kitchen off the dining area has its own entrance. All rooms are furnished with items from the era.

A staircase to the second level leads visitors to five exhibit rooms — a mining/logging/railroad exhibit that honors the building of the city and surrounding area; a ladies’ room featuring the contributions of women in the community; a children’s room that provides hands-on sharing of toys and items from the past; the sports room that highlights the accomplishments of community and school athletes; and a veterans’ room that showcases those who dedicated their lives to the country.

The museum society also has volunteers who help assist with researching family or community history projects.
