HANCOCK -- The 27th annual Shaft exhibition is on display in the Kerredge Gallery at the Copper Country Community Arts Center through Saturday.
There are many reminders of the rich copper mining history still present on the landscape.
The Shaft Community Exhibition called on artists to submit art inspired by this history -- not just the visible elements but the effects of the industry on the people and the land and how it shaped the Copper Country. This year, 12 local artists responded with 18 pieces. They include: Bob Dawson, Jeanne Houle Peters, Madhura Mehendale, Cynthia Cote, Phyllis Fredendall, Clyde Mikkola, Ray Ellison, Tammy Toj Gajewski, Deb Karppinen, Fredi Taddeucci, Daniel C. Boyer and Pamela Hecht.
The public is invited to vote for their favorite pieces throughout the exhibition.Voting also is taking place online. Go to the Facebook page at facebook.com/ CCCAC and look for the 2021 Shaft Exhibition photo album.
Votes will be tallied and the Community Choice Awards for Shaft winners will be announced in December.
The Copper Country Community Arts Center is at 126 Quincy St. in Hancock.
Exhibitions and programs are supported in part by a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
