Crystal Falls library lists events
CRYSTAL FALLS — The Crystal Falls District Community Library has announced its upcoming events for February.
The library will host a Global Explorer Story Hour about Botswana, Africa, at 10 a.m. Saturday.
They will study the San people, formerly known as the Bushmen of South Africa. They will read “Ostrich and Lark,” by Marilyn Nelson; “Honey… Honey… Lion!,” by Jan Brett; and “Meerkat Mail,” by Emily Gravett. The San people are known for their rock art, found in caves and rock shelters, so for a craft project participants will make rock drawings with chalk. Juice boxes and a snack are provided. All are welcome to attend.
Oscar Movie Viewings is planned every Thursday. The viewings will start at noon Feb. 10. For seven Thursdays — Feb. 10, Feb. 17, Feb. 24, March 3, March 10, March 17 and March 24 — the library will show Oscar-nominated movies to help patrons prepare for watching the Oscars on Sunday, March 27. A schedule of films is available at the library.
A Valentine’s Day concert featuring the local band The Faucault Brothers is planned at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12. The event is sponsored by the CFDCL Friends of the Library.
The concert will be the kickoff for the Blind Date with a Book event, also sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
The Friends will have several books wrapped up in Valentine’s Day wrapping paper, with the genre of the book written on the book; for example: adult mystery, young adult historical fiction, cookbook, etc. Patrons then check out their blind date book, and unwrap the book when they go home to read it.
“One of our Friends, who is also a Friend of the Portage Lake Library in Houghton, said the Blind Date with a Book event goes over well every year, and patrons love it,” Library Director Evelyn Gathu said. “That is why we thought we would give the event a try here in Crystal Falls.”
The library has scheduled a Valentine’s Day Story Hour at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14. They will read a variety of Valentine’s Day books. Snack will include Valentine’s Day cookies and juice boxes. Participants will make love bugs and butterflies from recycled toilet paper tubes.
