Beekeeping program at Senior Adult Day

SELF-TAUGHT BEEKEEPER Bernie Driggs of Sagola will be the featured speaker at the Senior Adult Day on March 14 at Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp in Crystal Falls.

CRYSTAL FALLS –“The Wonderful World of Bees” will be the focus of Senior Adult Day at Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, March 14.

Self-taught beekeeper, Bernie Driggs from Sagola will be the featured speaker.

“Sometime in the late ’70s, I wanted to make mead (honey wine),” Driggs said, “so I bought what I needed to build a hive, ordered a package of bees and I was a beekeeper, or so I thought.”

The novice beekeeper read a lot, learned from his mistakes, and in a few years had honey to bottle. Today, as a member of Northwoods Beekeepers of Iron Mountain, Driggs is dedicated to educating the public on the importance of the honeybee.

According to Driggs, the program will also include a brief history of the honeybee, a look at a year of a beekeeper, and an introduction to beeswax “from the hive to the candle.”

To make lunch reservations, call the camp office at 214-2267 by Friday, March 11. A $10 donation is requested.

Starting at $3.50/week.
