CRYSTAL FALLS --The documentary film, "The Enemy in Our Midst," will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday at the Crystal Theatre in Crystal Falls.
From 1944-46, roughly 1,100 German prisoners of war were held in the remote north woods at five POW branch camps in the Upper Peninsula. "The Enemy in Our Midst" preserves this little-known history.
Produced by Jackie Chandonnet and John Pepin of Ishpeming, "The Enemy in Our Midst" first aired on WNMU Public TV 13 in August 2004. Across the United States, about 375,000 German POWs were held at more than 655 camps. Despite these staggering numbers, 75 years after the fact, the story of their captivity remains largely untold.
The documentary reveals the story of the POW camps in the U.P. in great detail, capturing an aspect of World War II history that many feared would fade into obscurity without being recorded.
Pepin will be present to introduce the film and answer questions.
Admission will be by donation.
