The Vieness Piano Duo, featuring Eva Schaumkell and Vijay Venkatesh, performs Sunday at the Crystal Theatre.

CRYSTAL FALLS – Piano enthusiasts will get double the pleasure at 2 p.m. Sunday at Crystal Theatre in Crystal Falls when the Vieness Piano Duo from Los Angeles performs.

The duo with Eva Schaumkell and Vijay Venkatesh, has enthralled audiences with their electric and captivating performances of a wide range of repertoire. Their intuition for conversation coupled with a commanding stage presence has made them regularly in demand throughout the world.

German pianist Schaumkell has performed in the United States, the Middle East and throughout Europe. A review praises her “interpretational skills that combine intuition with analytical sense and remarkable musical maturity.”

Since 2014, she has won numerous awards in international piano competitions. In addition, she was awarded a Thornton Music Scholarship, the Carl Maria von Weber Scholarship as part of the 2014 Deutschlandstipendium, as well as the Drosihn Forderpreis scholarship.

Indian-American pianist Venkatesh has been hailed for his “dazzling pianism verging on the impossible, effortless technical command and authority with a sense of poetry and refinement that belies his years.”

Venkatesh has rapidly established a major international reputation as a top prizewinner in the San Jose, Seattle, Zimmerli, World Piano, and Waring International piano competitions. He has been named a Davidson Fellow Laureate at the Library of Congress, Grand Prize Winner of the Los Angeles Music Center’s Spotlight Awards, and has been featured on National Public Radio’s “From the Top,” with host Christopher O’Riley.

Four hands on a single keyboard “produce a range of musicality from warm lyricism to glittery cascades of sound,” an Orange County Register review stated. “Applause erupted on the final cadence, the audience on its feet for a justly impressive display.”

The concert is the fourth in Crystal Theatre’s eight-event Gem of a Season ticket package.
