Book club to begin in September

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Dickinson County Great Books Club will begin its 2022-23 schedule of discussions at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, in the multi-purpose room of the Dickinson County Library.

All meetings are on the second Monday of the month. Those interested are invited to participate in any one or all of the discussions.

The book for this year is “Great Conversations 3.” This collection of classic readings includes short stories, poetry and essays.

These selections have earned their reputation as classics because they address concerns of perennial importance to generations of readers, according to club member Mary Calo.

The readings for 2022-23 are —

— Sept. 12: “The Pardoner’s Tale,” Chaucer;

— Oct. 10: “An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding,” Hume;

— Nov. 14: “A Defense of Poetry,” Shelley;

— Dec. 12: “The Unknown Masterpiece,” Balzac;

— Jan. 9: “Second Epilogue to War and Peace,” Tolstoy;

— Feb. 13: “The Man Who Would Be King,” Kipling;

— March 13: “Six Characters in Search of an Author,” Pirandello;

— April 10: “The Open Boat,” Crane.

The “Great Conversations 3” anthology, published by the Great Books Foundation, can be ordered online at greatbooks.org or by phone at 1-800-222-5870. Attendees are asked to read the selection beforehand if they wish to participate in the discussion.
