Counter earns master’s degree

BALTIMORE, Ma. — Sara Jean Counter of Madison, Wis., graduated May 19 from the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, earning a master of science degree in bioinformatics.

The daughter of Jim and Cindy Counter, she is a bioinformatics scientist at Invenra in Madison.

Counter completed a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry in 2017 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a high school student in Virginia, she earned a certificate in biology/biological sciences from George Mason University in Fairfax.

Invenra, a biotechnology company, is focused on the discovery and development of multi-specific antibodies for cancer immunotherapy. Bioinformatics is a multidisciplinary field that merges computer and biological sciences.

Emma Johnson

OWOSSO, Mich. — Twins Justin and Emma Johnson of Owosso, Mich., were selected to attend Boy’s State and Girl’s State this summer. They will be seniors this year.

They were selected based on excellent academic and extracurricular work and outstanding leadership, character and community service qualities. They were sponsored by the American Legion Post 57 in Owosso.

Justin was elected to a statewide office as state senator.

Emma is a member of the National Honor Society and the varsity track and cross-country teams, the latter of which she is team captain. She received the class leadership award in 2020 and carries over a 4.0 grade point average. She is a volunteer for the Youth Health Committee and is a member of the administrative council at the First United Methodist Church.

They are the children of Larry and Krista Johnson of Owosso. Grandparents are Peter and Robin Johnson of Iron Mountain and Vicki Kallenbach of Prairie Farm, Wis.

They are third-generation attendees. Their father was a 1993 attendee and grandfather a 1964 attendee. Their great-grandmother, Patricia Jewell of Crystal Falls, was president of the American Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary in 1992-93.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has named its undergraduate students who received semester honors for spring semester academic achievement.

Students who earn a 4.0 grade-point average, which represents all “A” grades, receive highest honors. High honors go to students earning 3.99 to 3.75 grade-point averages. Honors are given to students earning 3.74 to 3.50 grade-point averages.

All were full-time students in the fall term, earning 12 or more credits of graded coursework.

Local students include:

Caspian — Alyssa Dominici, honors;

Florence, Wis. — Anne Nanninga, highest honors; Kayla Walters, honors;

Iron Mountain — Emily Nelson, high honors; Kelsey Wagner, high honors;

Iron River — Lucas Isaacson, highest honors;

Niagara, Wis. — Madison Bjorkman, high honors; Sydney Weber, honors;

Norway — Alexis Lusardi, high honors;

Vulcan — Cadeance Lindsley, honors.

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Two local students completed degree requirements at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The 112th annual spring commencement was May 15 at the La Crosse Center.

Students earning degrees include:

Florence, Wis. — Shayla McLain, bachelor of science, exercise and sport science major: exercise science-pre-professional track, honors;

Niagara, Wis. — Mary Hanson, bachelor of science, recreation management major: tourism and event management emphasis.

McLain and Hanson were also named to the spring semester dean’s list.

Qualification for the dean’s list is limited to students who have attained outstanding academic achievement. To be eligible, students must have earned not less than a 3.5 semester grade-point average and carried a minimum of 12 credits.

Jason Cretton of Niagara, Wis., was named to the chancellor’s list at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. The chancellor’s list honors those with perfect 4.0 grade-point averages for the spring 2022 semester.

Cretton was among more than 800 students from its three campuses who were awarded diplomas during the spring commencement. He received a bachelor of science degree in sustainable renew energy system.

Summer Parent of Iron River, a pre-medicine major, graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. The commencement ceremony took place on May 22 with U.S. Senator Dick Durbin delivering the address. The graduating class totaled 508.

Those graduating were given advice by Durbin, who reflected on the resilience and hard work of this year’s graduates and commended Augustana’s commitment to preparing the next generation of peacemakers and problem solvers.

MILWAUKEE — The se area individuals have been named to the dean’s list at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for the spring 2022 semester:

Florence, Wis. — Carly Schneider, education undergraduate;

Iron River — Rudi Passamani, school of the arts-undergraduate.

MENOMONIE, Wis. — Max Walker of Florence, Wis., graduated in May from University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wis.

He was awarded a bachelor of science degree in computer and electrical engineering.

ALBION, Mich. — Albion College has recognized Class of 2022 graduates, recipients of academic awards, and dean’s list and Albion College Fellow honorees.

Kingsford student Olivia Lorenzoni graduated summa cum laude with a degree in psychology and art. This degree was further awarded with Albion College Honors and Phi Beta Kappa honors. Lorenzoni was also named to the Albion College dean’s list for the spring semester. She is the daughter of Jon and Elizabeth Lorenzoni of Iron Mountain and is a graduate of Kingsford High School.

Iron Mountain student Maddie Ryan graduated cum laude with a degree in biology with a minor in anthropology. She is the daughter of Adam and Kristy Ryan of Iron Mountain and is a graduate of Kingsford High School.

— Kyle Evans, fire protection technician and fire science;

— Bobbi Johnson, Phi Theta Kappa, design and graphic technology and print technology;

Southern New Hampshire University has named these students to the winter 2022 president’s list.

Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and higher are named to the President’s List. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits; undergraduate day students must earn 12 credits in the fall or spring semester, and online students must earn 12 credits over two consecutive terms.

They include: Rebecca Takala of Crystal Falls, Madison Shorkey of Quinnesec and Leah Hunter of Kingsford.

Ann Guy of Kingsford has been named to Southern New Hampshire University’s winter 2022 dean’s list.

Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.500 to 3.699 are named to the dean’s list. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits; undergraduate day students must earn 12 credits in the fall or spring semester, and online students must earn 12 credits over two consecutive terms.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. — Teagan Petschar of Kingsford is among nearly 600 students from Saginaw Valley State University to earn a spot on the winter 2022 semester president’s list.

To be eligible for the president’s list, a student must take at least 12 credit hours and earn a 4.0 grade-point average.

KENOSHA, Wis. — More than 760 students have been named to the Carthage College dean’s list for the spring 2022 semester, including two local students: Balen Mautone of Iron Mountain and Macy Edwards of Kingsford.

MINNEAPOLIS — William J. Strand of Iron Mountain, a sophomore in the College of Education Development, has been named to the 2022 spring semester dean’s list at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.

To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must complete 12 or more letter-graded credits while attaining a 3.66 grade-point average.
