UPCAP official speaks at Golden K meeting

NORWAY -- People are not beautiful for the way they look, talk or walk -- they are beautiful for the way they love, care and share.

This is true of the Golden K members as they gather on Monday mornings, excited to see each other. Joyful conversation fills the room.

Sharon Scholke chaired the meeting. Alyce Derwinski kicked off the musical selections on the piano and singing was led by Lois Outcalt.

This week's birthday greetings go to Carol Olson. Anniversaries include Don and Rose Pedo, as well as, Sarah and Leon Gospodarek. Well wishes go out to Agatha Cavaiani and Paul Jacobs.

The 50-50 winnings were happily picked up by Ben Determan. Gary Proudfit shared the Happy Dollar messages which include 47 years of anniversary bliss for the Gospardeks, Rich Jouppi's enjoyment of his summer in the U.P. and Mary Jane Nelson's joy of having one of her sons here to help her move.

Annual dues of $35 each will be collected in September by Kirk Olson.

Scholke read the thought for the day, "There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship."

Cheryl Goc, director of the Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress Resolution Services, was introduced by Scholke.

Goc heads the 2-1-1 Call Center for the U.P. out of the Gladstone office. By simply dialing 2-1-1, callers can obtain information for their health and human service needs.

Call specialists are trained to focus on a caller's needs and connect them with information about a variety of community resources in their area. 2-1-1 is a non-emergency number but the call specialists will transfer emergency calls safely to the appropriate number. The phone call is free and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

There will be no meeting on Labor Day. Sue Proudfit will chair the meetings in September.

The next meeting will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept.12 at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford. Guests are always welcome.
