New director to take over at Iron County Museum
CASPIAN — The year 2022 saw successful preservation projects at the Iron County Museum, including re-painting St. Mary’s Church, saving the shingle mill in the Logging Camp, and repairing the foundation and basement of the Brandon Giovanelli Studio and Gallery.
The year 2023 will bring even more projects under new directorship.
Erika Sauter will be stepping down as museum director effective Jan. 1, and Kathlene (KL) Long, who acted as interim director while Sauter was on maternity leave this fall, has been named her successor by the board of trustees.
“When I was pregnant I knew how much I wanted to have a daughter,” Sauter said, “I didn’t know, though, how much I would want to be her mom. I have loved my time as museum director and am proud of what our team has accomplished in my time here, but I don’t want to work full-time and miss out on the chance to be as involved as I can be in Sonja’s life.”
While a change in leadership can sometimes set back an organization, in this case, it is providing an opportunity for continued momentum and even the creation of a new position that will allow for a focused approach to the museum’s collection of artifacts and exhibits.
Long will become the museum director, but her former role of office manager will be changed into a new position of archives and exhibits manager, to be filled by a longtime, dedicated volunteer, Deborah Davis.
“We have an incredible archive of photos, books, artifacts, and more that needs to be re-catalogued and organized for better longterm preservation,” Long said. “Deborah is also going to start the process of digitizing our collection so it can be more easily accessed by the public for research, genealogy and more.”
Long shared other projects slated for 2023 that will include the finalizing of the new Rock and Mineral exhibit, overhaul of Heritage Hall and several grounds maintenance projects.
“I’m humbled and excited to be entrusted with the role of museum director,” Long said. “I’m also so looking forward to working with our museum patrons, volunteers and board to continue the important work of preserving our history for future generations.”
Sauter relayed her feelings of excitement for the future of the museum, saying, “I’m so grateful to be leaving the care of our wonderful museum in the capable hands of a dedicated team. I have complete confidence in KL’s ability to take the reins and bring her own unique perspective and skills to the role.”
Sauter will take a part-time position as program coordinator at the West Iron District Library. “This is an exciting new chapter for the museum and for me,” she said, “and I hope the community will continue to be enthusiastically supportive of the museum and KL.”
The public is invited to see the projects underway, and show their support of the museum through the 33rd annual Christmas Tree Galleria, slated for Nov. 26 through Dec. 4. The fundraiser will include the beloved display of decorated trees, gift basket raffle and special programs.
