IRON MOUNTAIN -- Veterans Day is the formal day in which the citizens of the United States recognize and thank all living veterans.
We now have veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the combined wars that make up the Gulf Wars.
Our veterans here in Dickinson County range in age from 18 years old up to 99 years old.
They have all volunteered to sacrifice a portion of their lives to preserve the American freedoms we have enjoyed for hundreds of years. These brave men and women have stormed the beaches of Normandy, helped push back the Communist threat in South Korea, served in the deepest jungles of Vietnam, stood watch over Russia off the coast of Alaska during the cold war, served in the mountains of Afghanistan and Iraq and the deserts of Kuwait.
They have served during war and peace time, giving of themselves with courage and dedication until their tour has been completed.
As citizens we will never be able to understand the things they have done or the horrors that they may have witnessed.
Many of these men and women return with mental and physical scars that they will carry for the rest of their lives.
Friday, as we recognize, honor and thank our veterans, let's remember that they were willing to put their own lives down for our country.
They are the heroes that were able to return home to their loved ones, families and friends.
Who we will forever be thankful to have in our lives and our communities.
