Happy Veterans Day from the Iron Mountain VA
A Salute to Our Veterans
The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center is a primary and secondary level care facility with 17 medical/surgical beds and a 40-bed Community Living Center that provides residential care. In addition to its inpatient services, the facility provides a large scope of outpatient care.
During a Veterans Day speech in 2010 to soldiers at Yongsan Army Garrison in Seoul, South Korea, President Barack Obama said, “We also remember that honoring those who’ve served is about more than the words we say on Veterans Day or Memorial Day. It’s about how we treat our veterans every single day of the year. It’s about making sure they have the care they need and the benefits that they’ve earned when they come home. It’s about serving all of you as well as you’ve served the United States of America.”
This is precisely our goal every single day at Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center and throughout our community-based outpatient clinics. We strive to make sure our veterans receive exemplary medical care and understand all the benefits they are entitled to and can access those benefits.
To serve our veterans, the VA is constantly evolving and changing. The PACT Act, signed into law in August this year, will significantly expanded VA health care and benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange and other toxic substances, creating eligibility and providing service to thousands of veterans not currently enrolled in VA care.
Nearly $16 million was awarded to assist veterans and service members to participate in adaptive sports, supporting active, healthy lifestyles for amputees and wounded warriors.
Multiple grant opportunities were made available to veterans who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness, helping them secure permanent housing and creating safer environments for living.
The 24/7 Veteran Crisis Line implemented their new 988 +1 call in number, supplementing the existing 877-598-7793 number, making access to specially training, veteran specific crisis care for any veteran experiencing a mental health emergency quicker and easier to access.
These are just a few of the many ongoing changes the VA is making to address veteran needs and continue to provide excellent quality of care.
The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center encourages veterans who do not currently use the VA to see what we offer. Veterans may contact Enrollment and Eligibility at 906-774-3300, ext. 32810, or visit us in room 1102 on the first floor.
Caring for veterans is the very heart of President Abraham Lincoln’s mission, “to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan.”
On behalf of the women and men of the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center and its eight community-based outpatient clinics, I thank all veterans for their service and sacrifice.
