The Dickinson County Library has announced its May activities. They include:
--Summer Reading 2023 Coloring Contest kicks off on Monday, when children in pre-school through grade 5 may pick up posters at all three library branches, while supplies last. Color your poster and return to any branch by Monday, May 22. Entries will be displayed at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain and on the library's Facebook page for public voting between Tuesday, May 30 and Sunday, June 4. They will announce winners on the first day of Summer Reading, Monday, June 12. The Friends of the Library is sponsoring the contest.
-- A Pollinator's Garden with Northwoods' Beekeepers: from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Northwoods Beekeepers group members Bernie Driggs and Stacy Harrison will share a presentation on pollinators in the Dickinson County area, as well as tips for how to plant the perfect pollinator garden. This program is for adults and teens and no registration is required.
-- Lego Club: at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 9 at North Dickinson Branch.
This monthly program for kids in grades 3-8 offers an opportunity to be creative and have fun while building with Legos. This month participants will build a wrecking ball and a structure to knock down. Finished creations will be on display until the next meeting. No registration required.
-- Bow Wows and Books: at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 10 at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Learning to read doesn't have to be intimidating, especially when you have a furry friend at your side. Kids of all ages are invited to practice their literacy skills by reading aloud to therapy dogs Azul, a Siberian Husky-mix and Diogee, a Sheepadoodle. Required registration began on Wednesday; call the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain at 906-774-1218 to reserve a 15-minute time slot with either or both dogs.
-- Book Breakdowns: Lilia Boehmfeldt: at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13 at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Kids of all ages, with their caregivers, are invited to hear a story read by local author Lilia Boehmfeldt. Lilia has written "Excited Spring Morning," "K9 Rambo Comes to Florence," and "A-Z Write a Letter with Me." After she shares her stories, kids are invited to write letters on special stationary. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
-- Lego Club, Jr: at 4 p.m. Monday, May 15 at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Children in kindergarten through second grade will be challenged with task cards to build Legos. The program perfect for budding engineers. Legos are a great way to enhance fine motor skills, problem solving skills, and more. No registration required.
-- Gamers' Club: at 4 p.m. Monday, May 15 at the Solomonson Branch in Norway; at 4 p.m. Monday, May 22 at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; and at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 23 at the North Dickinson Branch.
Video game enthusiasts in grades 3-8 are invited to enjoy some snacks from the Friends of the Library and play a variety of video and board games at the monthly program.
-- Book Club: Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 16 at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Adults are invited to discuss "Firekeeper's Daughter" by Angeline Boulley. New members are always welcome to attend.
-- Social Media Dangers with Geno Basanese: at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 16 at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Officer Geno Basanese and staff members from the Caring House will present a program about social media dangers, including knowing who you are speaking to, consequences of sexting, and how to protect yourself as well as your teens. There will be a question and answer session included for attendees to address concerns and questions. This program is for adults and teens.
--Understanding Alzheimer's and Dementia: at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 17 at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Jonathan Vanderlugt of the Alzheimer's Association will present a program explaining the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia. It will include stages, risk factors, current research, available treatments, and ways the Alzheimer's Association can help. This program is for adults.
-- Book Club: at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 18, at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.
Adults are invited to discuss "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" by Taylor Jenkins Reid. New members are always welcome to attend book club.
-- Kickin' It Old School: from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 18 at the Downtown Stage.
The library will be part of Downtown Iron Mountain's first Third Thursday event of 2023, Kickin' It Old School. Play oversized yard games, enjoy some music, and a variety of food from truck vendors. Make sure to check out the library's table for information on "All Together Now," the summer reading program and get a temporary tattoo.
-- Book Breakdowns: Stacey Lantagne and Thor: at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 20 at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Local Author Stacey Lantagne will share her children's book series, "The Coping Crew," which focuses on various fears, phobias, and anxieties. She will talk about her inspiration for the series, the writing process, and how she got published. Books will be available for purchase and signing and therapy dog, Thor will be in attendance. This program is for adults and teens.
