EAGLE RIVER, Wis. -- Trees for Tomorrow Environmental Education Center is offering a canning workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 8, as part of their Sustainable Living Institute program series.
For adults eager to reduce their reliance on mass-produced foods and enjoy their garden harvest in the winter months, this course will teach the basics of preserving fresh foods through examining several potential methods.
The first, water-bath canning, involves using hot water to seal jars--a technique used to preserve acidic foods. The use of a dehydrator to safely preserve food will be covered, as well as methods and time frames for safely freezing food over a long period of time. "Canning is a cost-effective hobby," SLI program coordinator Todd Starling said. "With just a little practice, you'll be on your way to a full pantry you stocked yourself with produce straight from your own garden."
Attendees of the course will leave with a canning kit that includes tools needed for water-bath canning. The course costs $50 per individual or $70 per couple, with one kit provided per couple. Pre-registration is required and can be done online at the website https://www.treesfortomorrow.com/Current-Activities/ or by calling their office at 715-479-6456.
SLI courses, including the upcoming canning class, aim to teach or hone skills for adults seeking to live a more sustainable lifestyle. "For those who have their own garden," Starling said, "canning is a way to make sure none of that produce goes to waste."
