DC Library events for June

IRON MOUNTAIN –The Dickinson County Library’s activities for June will include:

— Interactive Family Movie Night: 6 p.m. Thursday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

Children ages 6 to 8 are invited to watch a popular Dr. Seuss favorite about caring a whole awful lot. During the movie, participants will follow a script that directs them to do certain actions along with the movie. Registration is required; call the Dickinson County Library at 906-774-1218 to sign up. Sponsored by Jamieson and Fulks Orthodontics and the Friends of the Library.

— Summer Reading starts Monday. All ages are welcome to stop in at any library site to register and get a bag full of fun freebies and a summer reading goal card to fill out and return to any branch for a chance to win a prize. Registration bags are sponsored by the Slajus family.

— #DCLbekInd Social Media Challenge: Starts Monday and goes through Saturday, July 1, at all three library sites.

During summer reading, patrons are encouraged to take a photo with the “Be the I in Kind” display, use the hashtag #DCLbekInd, follow the social media pages on Facebook and Instagram, and tag the library for a chance to win an Amazon Kindle. Sponsor is the Friends of the Library.

— Intro to Tarot Reading: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

Aimee Doyle will present a program to tweens, teens and adults on tarot reading for fun and entertainment purposes. She will share her background information on tarot, teach how it is done and then do some readings for patrons.

— All Together Now Storytimes: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; 10:30 a.m. June 22 at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township; 10:30 a.m. June 27 at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; and 10:30 a.m. June 29 at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.

These sessions for children through age 5 feature stories, songs, crafts, and simple science experiments to build early literacy. No registration is required for any of these programs, which are sponsored by Bay College West.

— Titanic Tea Party: 3 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

A traditional 1912 tea, similar to one done on the HMS Titanic that sank on its maiden voyage in April 1912, will be recreated and enjoyed during a presentation about local families who survived or perished on the Titanic. Attendees will get to keep their teacups as well as a small remembrance token. This program for teens and adults requires registration that begins today by calling the Dickinson County Library at 906-774-1218. Sponsor is Dr. Dale and Lucy Shampo.

— Bow Wows and Books: 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at the Dickinson County Library.

Learning to read doesn’t have to be intimidating, especially with a furry friend at your side. Kids of all ages are invited to practice their literacy skills by reading aloud to therapy dogs Azul, a Siberian husky mix, and Diogee, a sheepadoodle. Required registration opens one week before each program — call 906-774-1218 to sign up.

— Nature Detectives: 1 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at Norway bandshell, 915 Main St. in Norway. The program will be in the Norway City Hall if inclement weather threatens.

Children ages 5 to 8 and their caregivers are welcome to join the Clear Lake Education Center for a hands-on program that includes a story, exploration stations and tips on being a nature detective. Sponsor is attorney Brian Brouillette.

— Solomonson Branch Book Club: 2 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.

Adults are invited to discuss the June book club selection, “The Day the World Came to Town” by Jim DeFede. Partner books for this month are “The Big Umbrella” by Amy June Bates and “Branches of Hope” by Ann Magee.

— Tree Identification Workshop: 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 17, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain and City Park in Iron Mountain.

Michigan District Forester Joshua Isaac will present a program along with the American Tree Farm System and Dickinson/Menominee Conservation District. This presentation will begin at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain with a PowerPoint on tree identification and then shift to a hands-on experience in the City Park. Snacks will be available. Attendees must provide their own transportation to the City Park. This program is for adults.

— Gamers’ Club: 4 p.m. Monday, June 19, at the Solomonson Branch in Norway; 4 p.m. Monday, June 26, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; and at noon Tuesday, June 27, at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township.

Calling all video game enthusiasts to come play a variety of video and board games at this monthly program for kids in third through eighth grades.

— Tom Pease’s Family Concert: 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, at the Dickinson County Library; and 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.

Pease has been entertaining children for years with his boisterous, participatory songs, and has become a beloved addition to the Summer Reading program. His performances celebrate the power of music to bring everyone together. For all ages. Sponsors are Dr. Dale and Lucy Shampo.

— Iron Mountain Book Club: 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

Adults are invited to discuss June’s book club selection, “American Dirt” by Jeanine Cummins. The partner book for this month is “Borders” by Thomas King.

— Kingsford Turns 100: 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

Tony Edelbeck will present a PowerPoint program on the history of Kingsford after the Ford plant closed. Business growth and local families of the area will be part of the presentation as well. A question-and-answer session will follow, and copies of the new Kingsford Centennial book will be available for purchase and signing. The event is open to adults and teens.

— Legends at the Lake: Norway Lake: 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 23, at Norway Lake on Norway Lake Road in Felch Township.

Children ages 6 to 8 and their caregivers are invited to this special evening pop-up storytime at the pavilion at Norway Lake. This fun program will include stories, songs and crafts. No registration is required. Participants must provide their own transportation. Sponsor is The Drug Store.

— Kits for a Cause: Almost Home Animal Shelter: 10 a.m. Saturday, June 24, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

Throughout the month of June, people will be asked to donate items for local area animal shelters. A list will be available on what items are needed. These items will then be organized and prepared into kits and dropped off to the shelter. The event is open to teens and adults. Sponsor is Rize.

— Musical Monday: 6 p.m. Monday, June 26, at the Dickinson County Library.

Adults and teens will enjoy “Mamma Mia!.” listening to music composed by ABBA and watch Donna prepare for her daughter’s wedding in the Greek Islands with the help of two old friends. Meanwhile, the bride has a plan and secretly invites three men from her mother’s past in hope of meeting her real father and having him escort her down the aisle. Popcorn will be provided. Rated PG-13. Sponsors are the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Women’s Club and the Friends of the Library.

— Growing Together: noon Monday, June 26, at the Felch Senior Center, W4243 M-69 in Felch Township.

This intergenerational program brings children ages 5 to 8 and senior citizens together. They will decorate flower pots, plant flowers and exchange these creations with one another. Registration is required and begins June 19 by calling the Dickinson County Library at 906-774-1218. Sponsors are Slagle’s Family Farm and The Zonta Club.
