Mobile food pantry coming to Kingsford
KINGSFORD — Feeding America West Michigan is set to launch a mobile food pantry Thursday at the Ever After Event Center, 420 N. Hooper St. in Kingsford.
Drive-through distribution is scheduled to start at 10 a.m., with registration opening at 9 a.m.
Anticipating a high turnout, organizers are urging customers to approach the event center from the north via Woodward Avenue, turning south onto North Boulevard towards Pyle Drive. To avoid traffic congestion, organizers ask that people avoid approaching Hooper Street from Carpenter Avenue or Breitung Avenue.
Mobile food pantries function as mobile farmers markets, offering a wide array of groceries that include produce, protein, dairy, grains and more, all provided free of charge to individuals facing food insecurity.
The amount of food allocated to each attendee will be based on the size of their household. Attendees will not be required to present identification or proof of income. However, they will be asked to provide basic contact information, including household size and details about the number of children, seniors and veterans in their households. This information will assist Feeding America West Michigan in determining the demand for food in Dickinson County.
Each vehicle is allowed to collect food for up to three households. Individuals wishing to pick up food for additional families must bring a signed note from a person in each household, including their contact and household information.
Typically, mobile food pantries in the area serve about 300 families.
In addition to the upcoming distribution in Kingsford, Feeding America West Michigan has scheduled these mobile food pantry dates for Dickinson County: Tuesday, July 25; Wednesday, Aug. 23; Thursday, Sept. 21; and Wednesday, Nov. 29.
There will also be mobile food pantry distributions in Norway at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17; Thursday, Oct. 5; and Thursday, Dec. 7.
Volunteers are still needed to assist with this Thursday’s event. Those interested in volunteering should arrive at the Ever After Event Center at 8 a.m. and wear weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes. On-site facilities include a bathroom and an indoor volunteer lounge that will have snacks and water.
In addition to Feeding America West Michigan, the local events are sponsored by Holy Trinity Episcopal Church of Iron Mountain.
