Names in the News: Local students named to honor rolls, receive diplomas

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. — Teagan Petschar of Iron Mountain is among nearly 650 students from Saginaw Valley State University whose determination and commitment to academic excellence earned them a spot on the fall 2022 semester president’s list.

To be eligible for the president’s list, a student must take at least 12 credit hours and earn a 4.0 grade-point average.

William Strand of Iron Mountain, a junior at the College of Education/Human Development, has been named to the 2022 fall semester dean’s list at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must complete 12 or more letter-graded credits while attaining a 3.66 grade-point average.

RIPON, Wis. — Ripon College had its spring 2023 Catalyst Day, which is designed to showcase the college’s Catalyst curriculum and celebrate the achievements of the students who are completing the junior-level collaborative capstone.

Throughout the day, attendees had the opportunity to watch teams of students present problem-solving projects that tackle worldwide issues.

Kaeley Miller, a 2024 student of Norway, participated in a catalyst presentation titled “In the Spotlight: Providing Opportunities for Student Athletes in Milwaukee to Access Counseling with Animal Assisted Therapy.”

RIPON, Wis. — Kaeley Miller, a class of 2024 student from Norway, was named to the fall 2022 dean’s list at Ripon College. Miller is majoring in psychology with minors in sociology and criminal justice.

To qualify for the dean’s list at Ripon College, students must achieve a 3.40 grade-point average or higher on a 4.00 scale and complete at least 12 credits of regular letter-graded works.

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Tiare Hazen of Iron Mountain has been named to Southern New Hampshire University’s winter 2023 president’s list. The winter terms run from January to May.

Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and higher for the reporting term are named to the president’s list.

Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits over each 16-week term or paired eight-week terms grouped in fall, winter/spring, and summer.

MILWAUKEE — Carly Schneider of Florence, Wis., graduated with her bachelor of science degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Education commencement exercises May 21 in Milwaukee.

GROVE CITY, PA — Michael Halley of Kingsford, a political science major at Grove City College, has been named to the dean’s list with distinction for the spring 2023 semester.

He is a 2020 graduate of Veritas Scholars Academy and is the son of Michael and Jacquelyn Halley of Kingsford.

Students eligible for the dean’s list have a grade-point average of 3.40 to 3.59; for the dean’s list with distinction a GPA of 3.60 to 3.84; and for the dean’s list with high distinction a GPA of 3.85 to 4.0.

WINONA, Minn. — Ethan Wilcox of Quinnesec completed requirements for bachelor of arts degree at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota in April.

He is the son of Christopher and Diane Wilcox.

DE PERE, Wis. — These students have been named to the 2023 spring semester dean’s list at St. Norbert College.

A minimum 3.5 grade point average is required for academic eligibility.

Aurora, Wis. — Peyton Prevost;

ATCHISON, Kan. — Benedictine College has recognized those students who have distinguished themselves academically during the last semester, which ended May 9.

Any full-time student carrying a minimum of 12 hours and a perfect 4.0 grade-point average through the spring term is named to the president’s list.

Full-time students with 12 hours and a grade-point average of 3.5 to 3.95 are named to the dean’s list. Of the 2,234 students on campus for 2022-2023 academic year, 166 made the president’s list and 698 made the dean’s list.

Area residents who have earned these honors are:

MADISON, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Madison has recognized students named to the dean’s list for the spring semester of the 2022-2023 academic year.

Students who achieve at a high level academically are recognized by the dean at the close of each semester. To be eligible for the Dean’s List, students must complete a minimum of 12 graded degree credits in that semester. Each university school or college sets its own grade-point average requirements for students to be eligible to receive the distinction.

Local students are:

Florence, Wis. — Kathleen Selden, School of Business, dean’s list;

Iron Mountain — Cecilia Berutti, College of Letters and Science, dean’s list; Haley Gabriel, College of Letters and Science, dean’s list;

MILWAUKEE — These students have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Marquette University in Milwaukee.

To make the dean’s list, students must have earned at least 12 credits for the spring semester and have no disqualifying grades. The grade-point average threshold varies by college — for the College of Education and the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, undergraduate students must have at least a 3.7 to be named to the dean’s list.

The undergraduate GPA requirement is 3.5 for the following colleges: the Diederich College of Communication, the College of Business Administration, the College of Health Sciences, the Opus College of Engineering and the College of Nursing. All other programs have a 3.75 GPA minimum.

Local students are:

Iron Mountain — Benjamin Moreau is pursuing a master’s degree in physician assistant studies.

Kingsford — Luisa Munoz Ozzello is pursuing a bachelor of science in biomedical sciences.

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point honored more than 2,000 undergraduate students for attaining high grade-point averages during the spring semester of the 2022-2023 academic year.

Full-time undergraduates who earned GPAs of 3.90 to 4.0 (4.0 equals straight A) are given the highest honors designation. High honor citations go to those with grade-point averages from 3.75 to 3.89 and honor recognition is accorded to those with grade-point averages from 3.50 to 3.74.

Students who received honors include:

Florence, Wis. — Andrew Hirn, junior, honors; Sierra Thomas, senior, honors;

Gaastra — Megan Strom, senior, highest honors;

Kingsford — Madelyn Doucette, senior, highest honors;

Norway — Nicholas Kleikamp, senior, highest honors;

Quinnesec — Eric Sommerfeld, junior, high honors.

OSHKOSH, Wis. — University of Wisconsin Oshkosh officials have released the names of students who qualified for the dean’s list and honor roll in spring 2023 across its three campuses — Fond du Lac, Fox Cities and Oshkosh.

The term grade-point average requirement for university honor roll is 3.3; the term GPA requirement for dean’s list is 3.75 out of a possible 4.0.

To qualify, a student must have been enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits. There can be no individual grades lower than a “C” and no incomplete or non-reported grades at the time the process is run.

Local students include:

Crystal Falls — Evan Hedtke, dean’s list;

Iron Mountain — Colin Visintainer, honor roll;

Niagara, Wis. — Bailey Lamoreaux, dean’s list.

ALBION, Mich. — Albion College recognizes Class of 2023 graduates, recipients of academic awards, and dean’s list and Albion College Fellow honorees.

Sagola student Eddie Cardew was named to Albion College’s dean’s list for the spring 2023 semester. Cardew is majoring in social studies education with a concentration in secondary education.

Cardew is the child of Amanda Cardew and Jerry Duby of Sagola and is a graduate of Kingsford High School.

Kingsford student Grace Lorenzoni graduated cum laude with a degree in English language arts education with a concentration in elementary education. Lorenzoni is the child of Jon Lorenzoni and Elizabeth Lorenzoni of Kingsford and is a graduate of Kingsford High School.

Kingsford student Matthew Wilson was named to Albion College’s dean’s list for the spring 2023 semester. Wilson is majoring in chemistry education with a minor in mathematics secondary education and a concentration in secondary education. Wilson is a resident of Kingsford and is a graduate of Kingsford High School.

Iron Mountain student Monique Hernandez received the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies Award and a Jean Keller Memorial Endowed Essay in Spanish Award at Albion College’s Honors Convocation. Hernandez was further named to Albion College’s spring 2023 dean’s list.

Hernandez is majoring in gender studies with a minor in Spanish and is a member of the Prentiss M. Brown Honors Program.

Hernandez is the child of Mauricio Hernandez and Sarah Hernandez of Iron Mountain and is a graduate of Kingsford High School.

MILWAUKEE — This past spring, Benjamin Moreau of Iron Mountain graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee. Moreau earned a master’s in physician assistant studies.

Moreau was among 3,143 students to graduate from Marquette in May.

The university celebrated its 142nd Commencement with a series of events, including graduate recognition ceremonies at Fiserv Forum and a baccalaureate Mass on campus.
