IRON MOUNTAIN — The Dickinson County Community Chorus will take a step back in time to celebrate the music of the 1920s in honor of the city of Kingsford Centennial.
The “Music Under the Stars” concert will be presented at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 9, at the Lake Antoine band shell in Iron Mountain. The chorus will also provide music at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford morning service also that day, to thank the church for the use of their facilities for rehearsals.
The Dickinson County Community Chorus will be under the direction of Principal Conductor Crystal Hogan and accompanied by Jan Van Gasse and Mary Lee on piano. Dawn Kranz will direct the children’s chorus and Jeremiah Garrigues-Cortelyou will assist with a variety of vocal ensembles. Many instrumentalists will accompany the chorus to bring rhythmic energy to the overall performance. Tom Martin will be the emcee for the evening.
“We have planned an outstanding variety of choral selections that are exciting for singers and audience alike,” Hogan said. “With a shout out to the 2023 Kingsford Centennial, the chorus will feature songs from a century ago and also songs unique to Kingsford. Selections will include selections from ‘The Music Man,’ which was set in the early 1900s, sing-along songs and love songs from the 1920s as well as barbershop, patriotic, Michigan songs and gospel selections that you will want to dance to or hum and sing along with.”
When the children’s chorus isn’t singing, they will be selling popcorn. Proceeds will go to help fund improvements to the Lake Antoine Park.
Along with the throwback theme, the chorus will dress in a variety of costumes to include 1920s attire, baseball uniforms and patriotic colors.
The chorus will also sponsor a float in the Fourth of July parade, as well as the Kingsford Centennial parade on Aug. 5. Past and present chorus members are welcome to ride or walk with the DCCC float.
In the case of inclement weather, the concert will move to the First Presbyterian Church, 395 Hamilton Ave. in Kingsford. The concert will begin at 7:15 p.m. to give folks time to get to the alternative location.
