KINGSFORD — October began with summer-like temperatures. Everyone enjoys that more, including the seniors heading to Golden K on Monday. The fellowship room at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford exploded with happy greetings and excited chatter.

Chairman Ben Determan gathered the group to order as it was a perfect beginning to a spectacular day. Pianist Alyce Derwinski teamed up with Lois Outcelt to lead the singing. Beginning with “God Bless America” and ending with “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” the music complimented the upbeat day.

Welcome was sung for the guest speaker, David Holmes, superintendent of Breitung Township Schools. Joanne Lindholm happily picked up winnings from the 50-50 drawing. Happy Birthday wishes were sung to Sarah Gospodarek. Gary Proudfit read Happy Dollars thoughts that included many happy moments with family. A chili cook-off with cousins, a grandchild’s first soccer goal, and dancing at a wedding with a grandson were some of the events celebrated. Good times were appreciated by all with memories tucked away for future reflection.

Golden K extends sympathy to the families of Robert Tachick and Dr. Paul Jacobs. These gentlemen were long-time members who helped build this club.

Determan introduced the speaker of the day, David Holmes. Holmes originates from Wakefield, graduated from Northern Michigan University, and worked his way to Kingsford. He brought his expertise to the school system.

His work experience included middle school, high school and superintendent. After many years, he feels safe to call himself a “Flivver.” November elections are near and it’s time to become an informed voter.

Holmes handed out information concerning an upcoming bond issue. He discussed what it means for the taxpayer and the benefits it will bring to students and schools.

Schools are constantly looking for new and better ways to improve the curriculum. They must keep their buildings maintained and be able to offer updated technology. Schools deal with issues of growth, safety and security. They provide counseling services, books and venues to accommodate various programs. There are many facets that the average taxpayer may not be aware of. Take some time to ask questions, visit schools and know what our children experience. Become knowledgeable about a bond, since it represents your district. Be sure to vote according to your preference.

The backyard fence is a good place to exchange neighborhood stories. Voting issues can be addressed by those in the know. If an issue deals with your area, your child or your tax dollar, make it a priority to become informed. Be confident in your voting decision.

Holmes is ready to answer questions about the bond issue concerning Breitung Township Schools. Check with your county clerk about voter registration, absentee ballots, and voting locations. Your vote does count and Nov. 7 is only weeks away.

Golden K will meet Monday with speaker Maddie Bowman, granddaughter to member Bob Bowman, and a gold medalist from the 2014 Winter Olympics. All are welcome at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford.

Starting at $3.50/week.
