Lilja Trust donates to Cemetery Park entrance project

IRON MOUNTAIN -- The August Lilja Memorial Trust has announced its next beautification project will be the resurrection of the gateway arch at the entrance at Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
The project will include the architectural design of an ornamental steel arch assembly and sandstone pillars.
Completion for the project is anticipated to be mid-summer of 2024. Arco Engineering is designing the gateway in collaboration with Gundlach Champion, who is overseeing the project. U.P. Fabrication will create the metal work for the arch design.
Cost of the beautification project is about $100,000.
The Lilja Trust is looking to fund this project; however, any donations from the public would be greatly appreciated. Anyone wishing to donate can direct it to the August Lilja Memorial Trust Fund in care of Heidi Reddinger, 101 S. Hemlock St., Iron Mountain MI 49801.
The August Lilja Memorial Trust was established in 1994 for the purpose of funding beautification projects within the city of Iron Mountain. The committee, which oversees the selection of the projects, is compromised of a representative from United Methodist, First Lutheran and Covenant churches. Committee members are Heidi Reddinger, Andy Mendini and Jeff Porier.
Past projects include the bronze children statues at the Dickinson County Library, walking trails near Chapin Pit and the Bat Cave, placing a statue of a miner at the picnic area next to the Chapin Pit and landscaping at the entrance of City Park and the Crystal Lake Park. Most recently they assisted the Nordic Ski Club with the Rangers Cabin rebuild at City Park.
