Engel speaks at Golden K about Almost Home Animal Shelter

Kathy Jo Anderson photo Gilbert Engel, March chairman for the Golden K, gave the group a presentation Monday on the Almost Home Animal Shelter. Engel is a board member and volunteer at the shelter.

KINGSFORD — Life presents many challenges every day. Some are met head-on while others require a bit of ingenuity. At times it requires thinking outside the box, like when winter events are scheduled and there is little or no snow. Communities in the U.P. have valiantly put together alternative programs for Yoopers to get out and enjoy the world around them.

As March makes its appearance, rain today and snow tomorrow is possible. The Golden K, along with everyone else, take it all in stride.

Chairman Gilbert Engel gathered the group together to start the meeting. Alyce Derwinski on piano and Bill Roberts directing brought this chorus of senior voices to a resounding joyful noise. “Heart of my Heart” and “I’m Looking Over Four Leaf Clover” filled the room with happy music.

Happy Birthday was wished for Richard Jouppi Ochoa, who at this time is basking in the sunshine in Mexico.

A solemn moment was observed and “Auld Lang Syne” was sung in remembrance of longtime member Ken Schultz. He shared his wonderful singing voice with the Golden K. The club sends condolences to the family.

Sue Proudfit happily took home winnings from the 50-50 drawing. Happy Dollars included greetings from Brett, LaVerne and Al Calcari as they enjoyed visits with family. Bill Roberts and Charlie Younts had great ski days at Pine Mountain. Golden K welcomes Larry and Kathy Bourdeau as new members. Welcome on board.

Engel also serves as board chairman for the Almost Home Animal Shelter. He updated the seniors on happenings with the shelter. Their mission to place animals in a safe environment or forever homes requires tremendous dedication and heartfelt work.

Animals of all shapes, sizes and conditions find their way to this shelter. They are matched with people who evaluate their health, personality and compatibility with other animals and people. Finally, the best placement opportunity for the animal is determined. They will accept almost all types of animals, large or small.

They are open seven days a week and count on volunteers to keep the shelter clean and safe. Food, veterinarian services, and necessary exercise are provided.

The shelter facility is large, which enables each section to fulfill needs for different animals. There are separate areas for in-take, dogs, cats, adoptable animals, sick, small, large, and vet services.

Requirements for animals are met by professional, knowledgeable, caring people who devote their time and energy to well-being. A full basement is used for dog training.

Individuals with experience are able to work with the animals to assure good behavior and obedience.

The facilities include a conference room for committee members and board meetings.

Difficult decisions are handled by placing emphasis on what is best for the animal.

Fundraising is vital to the life of this organization. In 2023, dog intake was 303, outgoing 297. Cats intake was 523, outgoing 526. Animals are surrendered, adopted, reclaimed, born, died or euthanized. Costs to operate run into the thousands.

Staff manager Diane Luczke and her crew coordinate with Nancy Schwab as lawyer consultant and a committee of seven members to ensure effective operation.

The shelter maintains a safe, clean, well-run organization for the benefit of the animals that find themselves homeless.

Volunteers are always needed and welcomed as a vital part of this effort.

Michigan returnable cans can be dropped at the property. The shelter uses money received to supplement their budget.

You will feel good and the animals will be happy, too.

Golden K will meet at 10 a.m. Monday and will feature the Niagara Forensics Team as special guests. These young people are fantastic speech and debate artists. All are welcome.
