KINGSFORD — The day started out rather gloomy and rainy. It was “Eclipse Monday” and we all wondered what we might see. A Yooper weather phenomenon occurred, and within five minutes the skies turned blue and the sun was bright. Hopefully you grabbed those special glasses and witnessed a spectacular phenomenon unfold.

Monday mornings bring the Golden K seniors together for their spectacular type of event. It is always interesting and entertaining. Sometimes it even comes together as planned. Bill Roberts grasped the chairman’s gavel and brought the meeting to order with the usual opening ceremonies, which this group performs with pride. Roberts lead the group in singing some great old songs. On the piano, Alyce Derwinski did her best to keep the group harmonized.

Tamara Juul was welcomed as guest speaker and just happened to win the 50/50 drawing. These seniors know how to treat their guests properly.

Among the many Happy Dollar thoughts shared was Juul grateful that the scholarship fund has opened a selection for non-traditional students. Judy Sielaff enjoyed watching her grandson play basketball, and Kirk Olson brought all thoughts together in remembrance of members and friends who passed this year.

Roberts introduced Juul, executive director of the Dickinson Area Community Foundation, or DACF.

Juul brought the group up to date on the Golden K Scholarship Fund. The DACF provides grants and funds for non-profit organizations, universities, hospitals, churches, environmental causes, health care and fine arts.

The staff works diligently with grant fund applications following set criteria to make designations. Endowment Funds and Community Impact Grant investment funds make consistent withdrawals from invested capital. This provides scholarships to students.

Both financing structures work with the Golden K on many levels. They provide materials and assistance with children with special needs events, and help many other local organizations with their philanthropy. The goal is “Providing a quality of life for the people who live here.”

The DACF serves bordering communities as well as the local area. They strive to promote, encourage, and educate residents of all ages. There is a large field of grants and funds available for the betterment of individuals and communities.

Golden K will meet Monday with Shelley Gunville. Meetings are at 10 am at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford.

All are welcome to come and join the fun. We conclude with a thought for the day: No winter lasts forever. No spring skips its turn. April is a promise that May is bound to keep.
