Dickinson County Library announces events planned in May

IRON MOUNTAIN -- May activities for the Dickinson County Library system will include --
-- Sticky Storytime Sessions: 10:30 a.m. today at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township; 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; and 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.
Spring into early literacy with books, songs, and activities at the Sticky Storytime Sessions. These programs that are geared for kids through age 5 and their caregivers will use the five ready-to-read practices: reading, singing, talking, playing and writing to promote early literacy and create lifelong readers. No registration required.
-- Book Breakdowns: Audra DeRidder: 10 a.m. Saturday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Local author and Iron Mountain Public Schools teacher Audra DeRidder will discuss her new children's book "I'm Just Too Much" with kids in kindergarten through second grade. The book talks about the importance of acceptance. Books will be available for purchase and signing. After the story, participants can make friendship bracelets. No registration is required.
-- The Run for the Roses: 3 to 5:45 p.m. Saturday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain and the Wild Horse Saloon, 714 River Ave., Iron Mountain.
Adults and teens will enjoy a presentation on the history of the Kentucky Derby, including origin, traditions, interesting facts, and a Derby winner with a local connection to Iron Mountain. Non-alcoholic mint juleps will be available, and participants will have a chance to win a Pegasus pin. Fake bets for the 2024 Derby winner will be placed for fun. Participants are encourage to wear Derby gear, including big hats.
After the presentation at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain, everyone is invited to the Wild Horse Saloon to watch the 2024 Kentucky Derby live.

-- Lego Club: 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Solomonson Branch in Norway; and 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township.
Build yourself up at Lego Club. This monthly program for kids in third through eighth grades offers the opportunity to be creative while building with Legos. This month, participants will Spin the Wheel Challenge to determine what they will build. Kindergarten through eighth grades are invited to attend North Dickinson's session. No registration is required.
-- Yoga at the Library: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Local yoga instructor Kimberly Spigarelli will lead teen and adult patrons through beginning to moderate poses and breathing exercises. Participants are asked to bring a mat or towel. Registration is required; call the library at 906-774-1218 to sign up.
-- Bow Wows and Books: 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Patrons of all ages and reading abilities can practice their reading skills by reading aloud to therapy dogs Azul, a Siberian husky mix, and Angel, a Teddy Bear. Registration is open; call the library at 906-774-1218 to sign up for a 15-minute time slot with either or both dogs.
-- The Art of Being: 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
This drop-in program is designed for patrons in fifth grade and older who are currently battling cancer, are survivors of cancer, and for those that are/have been caregivers this includes family, friends, medical personnel, etc. This is a safe space to share experiences and meet others. Each month a craft will be available for attendees to do if they wish; May will be a desktop diorama. No registration is required.
-- Gamers' Club: 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 13, at the Solomonson Branch in Norway; 4 p.m. Monday, May 20, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; and 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township.
Kids in third through eighth grades are invited to play a variety of video and board games at this monthly program. No registration is required.

Adults can discuss the May book club selection, "Grim Paradise: The Cold Case Search for the Mackinac Island Killer" by Rod Sadler. New members are always welcome.

-- Solomonson Branch Book Club: 2 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.
Adults can discuss the May book club selection, "The Librarian Spy: a novel of World War II" by Madelin Martin. New members are always welcome.
-- Book Breakdowns: Rod Sadler: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Michigan Notable true crime author Rod Sadler will share what inspired him to become an author, details about his books and host a question-and-answer session. Sadler has written several books on notorious murders in the Great Lakes State, including: "To Hell I Must Go: The true story of Michigan's own Lizzie Borden" and "A Slayer Waits: the true story of a Michigan Double Murder." His most recent book, "Grim Paradise: The Cold Case Search for the Mackinac Island Killer," focuses on a murder that occurred on Mackinac Island in 1960. Books will be available for sale and signing. For teens and adults.
