FLORENCE, Wis. — The Wild Rivers Quilt Guild invites all area quilters to join them for their upcoming meeting on Wednesday, beginning promptly at 5:30 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 900 Central Ave., intersection of U.S. 2 and 101 at the west end of Florence
Their monthly presentation will be given by Barbara Vlack, a seasoned instructor of the impressive and widely used Electric Quilt 8 Software. She will host a workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the church.
Vlack’s lecture will focus on an overview of what EQ8 offers for designing quilts, with a quick exploration of the vast choice of blocks in its library plus the possibility of drawing an original block or editing an existing block.
There are many endless layout possibilities for setting blocks into quilts of all sizes. A perk of EQ8 is the ability to color a quilt with actual fabric samples to determine the desired look of a quilt before cutting even one piece of fabric as well as estimate yardage required.
EQ8 also allows for printouts of block patterns as templates or foundation piecing patterns; it provides rotary cutting sizing determined by the designer.
“It’s amazing what all the program has to offer,” said a spokesperson. “The presentation will include a brief explanation of how to identify the structure of a quilt or block to figure out how to create that quilt in EQ8. The technology EQ8 offers quilters is amazing and helps to improve our creativity.”
Vlack will also be teaching a quilt-making method of paper foundation piecing using provided patterns printed from EQ8 software, featuring a circular flying geese block. Her paper piecing method uses freezer paper foundation patterns and allows for no sewing through the paper and thus, no paper to remove from your beautifully constructed quilt blocks, giving the precision of paper piecing without the mess and fuss of tediously tearing off all that paper from the backside of your blocks.
There is a $50 fee for the workshop for non-members, $40 members.
If you are interested in the workshop, please enroll by sending an email to wildriversquiltguild.org and mailing a check made payable to Wild Rivers Quilt Guild to WRQG Treasurer, 8879 Lakeview Drive, Iron Mountain, MI 49801 or bring it to the meeting.
