KINGSFORD — No matter how many hot sunny days you have, one is never ready for the end of summer. But, as the days start to get shorter and colder at night, one thing is sure, summer is at an end.
Golden K members arrived right on time, despite the slower rising sun. Chair Brett Calcari summoned everyone to their feet for the pledge of allegiance. Alyce Derwinski led the group with her talents on the piano, as our guests, Crystal Hogan and Dawn Kranz, directed the singing of some old familiar tunes. The welcome song greeted the day’s guests: Hogan, Kranz and Kathy Arnold. Happy Birthday was sung for Don Pedo.
The lucky Pot of Gold winner was Pat Polzin. Gary Proudfit read the Happy Dollar messages. Kathy Jo Anderson is looking forward to visiting Wisconsin Dells with her daughter and family. Judy Sielaff is happy to have her husband and daughter home after a 6,000-plus-mile road trip to seven national parks. Brett Calcari is hopeful that next week his parents, sister, brother and daughter will be attending.
Members were reminded of the Peanut Sale to be held Friday at area grocery stores. Calcari was the contact to sign up for a shift.
Thought for the day was “All dreams are within reach. All you have to do is keep moving toward them.”
Hogan and Kranz stepped up to the podium and told about their wonderful experience in New York City over Memorial Weekend. They both applied and were accepted to join a choir of more than 100 voices to perform at the Lincoln Center.
The event was a World Premiere Edition of “Kindness,” with words and music by Mark Hayes. They received the music and recordings several months before the performance so they could prepare. They spent many hours on this difficult music to be ready for the show. There was a four-hour rehearsal once they joined the other vocalists in New York.
The Lincoln Center is a 16-acre complex and serves as home to the N.Y. Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera House, Juilliard School of Music, the Chamber Music Society, New York City Opera, New York City Ballet, the Film Society, and the School of American Ballet. When their performance was done, they had the privilege of attending the Mozart requiem on the same stage.
It wasn’t all work and no play for Hogan and Kranz. While in New York, they met with family and friends, attended a Broadway play, shopped and dined at several fine restaurants.
The duo ended their presentation by singing “I’ll Follow the Sun” and “I Can See Clearly Now.” Calcari thanked them for their interesting program and invite them back next week to present a video of their Lincoln Center debut.
Golden K meets at 10 a.m. Mondays at the First Presbyterian Church. All are welcome.
