Tamburitzans at the Crystal Theatre

CRYSTAL FALLS — Crystal Theatre will have the Tamburitzans back on its stage at 6 p.m. Friday.

Celebrating their 87th season, the vibrant group of singers and dancers are excited to show off their newest production, “Reflections.”

“Whether this is your first show, or your 50th — our performance this year feels like you’re seeing the Tamburitzans for the first time,” said Alyssa Bushunow, executive director and a former performer with the ensemble. “With new technology, costumes and format of our show, there is a feeling of immersion in these world heritages.”

Traversing Croatia, Bulgaria, Armenia, Ukraine and more, 27 talented artists escort audiences across the globe in two hours of song and dance. Children and adults alike are mesmerized with a kaleidoscope of color, sound and movement.

“It’s folk … with a fresh coat of paint,” Artistic Director George Kresovich said. With a background in entertainment at Disney, Kresovich knows what it takes to captivate an audience.

To him, the Tamburitzan production is a delicate balancing act. “Tradition and modernity, education and entertainment are all ingredients mixed to perfection to craft a phenomenal show,” he said.

It all began in Minnesota in the early 1930s when Dr. A. Lester Pierce met tamburitza musicians Matt L. Gouze, Frank Gouze and Anthony Antoncic. Pierce’s intrigue with the tamburitza, a stringed lute-like instrument, sparked an idea that has endured as one of the world’s finest, longest-running live stage shows of its kind.

Year after year, generation after generation, the Tamburitzans dazzle audiences across the country with elaborate costumes and incredibly versatile musicians, singers and dancers.

The talented young performers are full-time students who have chosen to continue the Tamburitzans’ legacy by bringing international cultures to the modern stage.

Season flex-passes or advanced tickets for the Tamburitzans can be purchased online at thecrystaltheatre.org, by phone at 906-875-3208 or in person 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday at Stage Left.

Starting at $2.99/week.
