Copper Country Community Arts Center exhibition through Saturday
HANCOCK — The Copper Country Community Arts Center’s new exhibition in the Kerredge Gallery featuring new paintings by Randy Wakeham will be shown through Saturday.
Thirty-nine paintings depict the many moods of Lake Superior, its rugged shore, sandy beaches, and quiet forestlands.
Wakeham was born and raised in the Copper Country. He studied at Finlandia University’s School of Art and Design and earned his bachelor of fine arts degree in 2004. All of his subject matter relates to the local natural landscape.
When working on his paintings he starts with the question, “What do I love about being here?” He doesn’t always get a clear answer but he says that water keeps coming up. Being surrounded by water is the reason many people love being here.
Wakeham captures the gentle movement of water as well as the drama of water in motion. He has mastered the shapes that water takes in all of its moods and how it meets the shore.
This exhibition is supported in part by a grant from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Copper Country Community Arts Center is at 126 Quincy Street in Hancock. Gallery hours are from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
