KINGSFORD — Christmas is a time for enjoying family together. There are parties, school programs and concerts. Stores are brightly decorated and so are many homes. There is an air of anticipation and excitement as Christmas comes closer.

The Golden K facilitates a Christmas party for children with special needs. Kids of all ages come from as far away as Forest Park School in Crystal Falls. Club members gather early, bringing spouses and friends to help. Kathy Arnold and Kendra Trulock from Dickinson Iron Community Service Agency joined in the fun and rolled up their sleeves. There were tables and decorations to set and food to prepare. Of course Santa had to dust off his suit and comb out his beard. Gifts and snacks arrived by the sleighful from Walmart and the local sheriff department. Chairperson Pat Polzin rang the bell, signaling the beginning of a very busy day. Right on schedule, the delightful groups of excited children poured into the room. The event’s guest entertainer, the Rev. Jim Janofski, began playing Christmas songs as everyone found their seat.

It wasn’t long before the red-suited gentleman entered the room and took his seat. Children lined up to talk with Santa. As Pastor Janofski began playing, there were several children singing along and some even dancing. The rest of us were content to listen. Nothing compares to the exuberance of happy children.

Santa (Gary Proudfit) talks with James Wilson.

He plays a variety instruments that come in all shapes and sizes. He shared his unique talent by playing and singing many Christmas songs.

Brett Calcari emceed the festivities. He engaged the children with questions about Christmas and found many had the right answers. After everyone was full of hot dogs, chips and cookies, the children were given a treat bag to take home and a personal blanket with pillow. The blanket sets were provided by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department Blanket Project. They were supplemented through a generous giving program sponsored by Walmart. The young people left happy. Golden K members left a bit tired but definitely uplifted. It was an exceptional day for all.

Thanks and appreciation goes to Norway Elementary, middle, and high school; Forest Park; and Willis Schools, teachers and aides. They are the ones who bring these students to our parties and safely return them to their schools. Thanks also to the parents who allow and encourage these students to participate.

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Roger LeDuc. Roger was an esteemed man in his own right and his wife, Sue, has been the club’s fill-in for pianist for many years. Golden K sang “Auld Lang Syne” in his memory and send sincere condolences to the family.

Since the holidays fall in the middle of the week, Golden K will not meet again until Jan. 6. Crystal Hogan will help bring in the New Year by sharing her music. Come down to the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford at 10 a.m. and you’ll be appreciated and welcomed.
